I have the paperwork to apply for a 03ffl.But I have read many conflicting opinions about if it's worth the hassle.Just wanted to get some feedback from the forum.I buy very few guns in a year, however my interest is in the older (c&r) era guns.

My personal interest is also in older guns. I have had a C&R ever since I gave up my regular FFL under the Clintonistas. It's paid for itself in avoiding Instas-chek fees , the mandatory trigger locks ($5 per gun) It's worth it to me as I buy some guns at a local auction houses 4 yearly firearms auctions. It also qualifys for dealer pricing at many online suppliers. It's also easy to send a copy to anyplace ya buy ammo (mail-order or online).
However , I have also called it a license to spend money.

I have considered getting a C&R license for some time. The down-side, in my opinion, is having your name on a list in Washington, DC

Had mine 4 yrs. Never sent a copy yet for discounts, been wanting to send one to Brownells. Its nice to have a gun sent to your house, not an FFL. If there is any drawback when you sell a C&R gun you have to get the buyers name to log in to your book. If I wouldn't have renued my C&R the govt didn't want me to send my 'book' to them. If I go out of state and stumble on something I can take it with me. Larry

Go ahead and get one. It is absolutely worth the money. You can get dealer discounts from a lot of places that you probably already buy from: MidwayUSA, Brownell's, Numrich, etc. The first time you place an order under your dealer discounts you will probably save the cost of you license. The paperwork requirements aren't that onerous, and I don't believe there is any obligation to turn over your bound book if you decide to drop your C&R, as opposed to the requirements for an 01FFL. Plus it is extremely cool to have the UPS guy hand you a rifle and go on his way.

You're assuming that you name isn't already on a list. Ever buy guns or ammo with a credit card? Or, oh I dunno, sell something that's gun related? ;)

Or get a Social Security card, serve in the military, file income tax, etc etc. I'm sure you're already on the "right wing extremist" list for some reason or another! I applied for my C&R back in early July. Called the 800 number a couple weeks ago to see what the holdup was, and was told another month. I think it'll definitely pay for itself. If I would have had mine sooner, I would have saved more than the fee already. But, it's the government. Hurry up and wait. (They made sure to debit my account as soon as they got the app).

My name on a list? Heck, I still have my original "Vast Right Wing Conspiracy" coffee mug (only charter members got those).

I have saved many times over the cost and minimal hassle of having a C&R. I've bought several "oldies" at auctions, and would have had to return (50 mile trip) several days later to pick it up (IL 3 day handgun wait). Buying across state line where would otherwise would have had to had shipped to an FFL. Having sent directly to my home from FFL in another state. Discounts from Midway, Graf's, Brownell's. I've only bought a little over a dozen and not sold any, but it's been well worth the $30 and the little time involved.

I'm on my 3rd renew, the thing pays for itself in Brownells discounts alone for me. Cash & carry out of state and since I live in CA, matching it with the CA issued COE means cash & carry for C & Rs and no "1 per 30" handgun purchase restriction on dealer sold new guns. Hopefully most other states don't restrict the C & R like CA does, but also getting C & Rs delivered by mail and skipping any FFL dealer costs is a big cost saving.

I found that the "I don't buy many guns" changes a bit when a C & R is issued. And I figure we're mostly on some government list somewhere already.
