I've noticed a few of you posting what are very good deals on guns, mostly S&W revolvers, purchased from Cabela's.

There's a store near me, a couple of years old now, and I must say I'm seeing not only ridiculously high prices on the tags but also no interest in dealing. I can't quite figure it out.

They had a rough 640 .38spl last year that was priced at $649 (plus tax/background fee) and they acted as if it's the holy grail. In the library there are various Smiths in 75-85% shape priced as guns in 95+%.

Recently a member posted about buying a 2" 64 NY-1 for $400 at his Cabela's! Oh my, that almost gave me another heart attack LOL. That would never happen at this store. I'm not aware of guns commanding higher prices here in Colorado but maybe that's the issue. Hmmm.

I'm not complaining about their policy at this store, just curious about the deals some are coming across. Thanks for any enlightenment, maybe I'm just naive.

Sounds like typical MT Gun Show pricing structure. 70% guns, priced as it they were proper, unmolested 99% guns. LOL.

There's nothing I buy at Cabela's, whose regular price is competitive. I strictly buy sales. For guns, they send out circulars that knock $100-$150 off the price, and that's the only time they beat other options. Get their credit card, and they send you codes for an additional 20% off, that can be combined with other sales for prices that approach 1/2 off on non-gun purchases.

Bass Pro plunked down 4.5 billion, that's billion with a B. I wasn't impressed with prices in the Delaware Cabelas, the only one I have ever been to.

I just made my second trip to Cabelas, Dallas Wva. 1st trip was
when they opened several years ago. Saw all I wanted to see at
that time, would have never gone back but family was on me to
use up gift cards before Bass Pro deal voids them. Took a quick
look at S&Ws and Pre 64 Wins. Priced 60% guns at 90%+, and
they had some mighty rough "vintage" H&Rs, IJs, ect with crazy
prices on them. Used my cards on $450 worth of powders and
bid them good-by. The Cabela hype is for the Mall People, I can
buy cheaper at almost any LGS in the area.

That must be the store in Lone Tree. I posted a rant a few years back about the service (or rather lack of) I got in the gun library.A Cabela's that is built in what I consider to be an upper income area should not rip off the public just because of the location.I half expected to see a sign posted outside the library "By appointment only...Coat and tie required."

I bought a handgun at the Thorton location from their gun library and the service was excellent.Of course the store is located where you would expect to get clientele that actually look like gun owners or hunters and drive pickups and beaters.

Then again maybe it was the cologne I was wearing...:rolleyes:

Lone Tree, CO Cabelas

I agree for the most part with the Gun Library pricing. However, I have found they will (or have been willing to) drop 10% off the tag price for cash. Of course, there is still the NICS fee and a pretty hefty sales tax. You basically walk out for the tag price.

That said, I have bought 3 SW revolvers from them over the last six years or so. Of course, that was out of maybe 150 visits! The 5 inch M&P RB was pristine and over priced. On the other hand, I got screamin' deals on a pre-war Heavy Duty and a transitional 38/44 Outdoorsman that they didn't know what they were besides "old 38 Special" Deals on magnums of any sort are pretty much non-existent. And OMG, have you looked at the case of Colts SAA?

My closest Cabelas in 50 miles away in Augusta, Ga.......Prices aren't that great....But they have LOTS of reloading supplies....More than any local gun shop.....Academy usually beats them on prices on the other stuff.

I like Cabelas, I shop there once in a while, I do not buy guns there. I buy guns from my local gun store. I buy powder I cant get at my local gun store, If I can't find it at my store or locally I drive the eighty miles to Green Bay.

I've picked up a lot of good deals from Cabelas over the years. Just recently they had 10% off all new firearms. I picked up a Remington RM380 for $286 OTD and then a week later the new Shield .45 for $381. Also found a few gems in the gun library. I'm sure every store and state are different.

There are much better deals online than I ever find at any gun stores, especially when you figure in the 8 or 8-1/2 percent sales tax.

For what? Inventory? Buying out Cabelas?
Sorry, I must be a little slow today - I'm not making the connection...

EDIT: Nevermiiiind! I followed leswad's link and read the story.
According to Bloomberg it was FIVE point five Billion.
That's a pretty big pile....

When the Cabelas first came to STL there were many bargains on used guns. I bought quite a few. After a few years I only bought ammo or reloading supplies. Right after the store opened I had the Reno Cabelas ship in 2 Pythons, a 4" and a 6" they were so cheap I bought both. Now the gun library looks like a Holland and Holland showroom price wise.

Like quite a few have said, better prices at LGS'.

About 6 months after the Wheeling, W VA store opened (10-12 years ago), the wife and I took a 3 day trip to do some shopping. It was fantastic. The quality and variety of the clothing, the actual bargains in the Bargain Cave. Did the same when the Dun Dee, Mich. store opened only at 9 months and it was a one day trip. Got 3 or 4 good/great deals.

When the Columbus, Ohio store opened, (and it is a small store for a Cabela's) Not much selection, not much service, there have been a few deals on $3000 and above shot guns (my brother has bought 2) but hand guns and rifles are ridiculous. Everything in the bargain cave was brand new/discontinued and marked down to list for other stores, boxes missing major parts 5% off.

The fine outdoor clothes I bought 12 years ago, are not offered at any price.

I've never been to a Bass Pro shop, but the worst it can be is More Of The Same! I have been cashing in all my "Cabela's Points" for ammo for months now, so I don't get stuck.

Smart move. :) The same can be said about Cabela's gift cards which have been available at times at a discount through that big auction website and other sources. My friend is currently holding a bunch of them due to a planned revolver buy that didn't work out. I warned him yesterday to start thinking about what he is going to do with them. My own gift cards are all gone and there won't be any more coming... I guarantee that! :D
