May be a dumb question answered before,

but if I buy a California compliant (10 shot) full sized M&P 9mm, and then later move to another state where magazines are not regulated, can I use it with the larger 17 rnd magazine?

Or does S&W do something to "californicate" the gun so it can't use bigger mags?

If you notice on the bottom of the CA compliant mags there is a space. Normal capacity mags will work just fine.

Yes, the guns are the same as those sold in other states.
You see, the California Legislature knows it is not the gun, not the bullets, but the normal capacity magazines are the banned assault weapon.

Not entirely true. The M&P's sold in California have to have the magazine disconnect in the pistol, and that's probably not the case in most other states.

When I escaped from CA I purchased M&P's without the magazine disconnect. Then, earlier this year I put my CA approved M&P on consignment at a LGS. This was at the height of the panic buying. The guys at the shop thought the pistol would sit there for a while because of it's two ten round magazines and pc magazine disconnect. It sold in four days.

Now that the panic is subsiding, the new owner can purchase standard capacity magazines for it and it'll work just fine.

Thank you for the clarification. I missed that tidbit when I read the latest CA rules.
