I know this isn't a Ruger forum but just asking because a S&W revolver can be dry fired. I wonder if the Sp101 can as well?

Just got my first SP101 and it is rough compared to the Smiths I have had. Don't know if i will warm up to it.

Yes.
The Ruger's are specifically designed to allow dry firing on the SP-101's in center fire.

As an owner of one...yes they can...also the trigger pull gets smoother as well at least it did in mine...

I would recommend not to dry fire a S&W .22 revolver. Model 17, 617, 48, etc. Nothing that is rimfire, unless you use snap caps or dummies.
Center fire is OK, but I did had to replace a firing pin one time on a Model 10. Maybe it was just it's time to go while dry firing.

If your .22 is a "newer" 617 with the same FMFP as the others (no external cross pin under the rear sight) dry firing is fine as long as you don't have a C&S extended firing pin in it.
