Just bought an Uncle Mikes #3 for my K-22 Model 17-6. Can I safely store my 17-6 in the holster? Right now its kept wrapped in a cotton flannel cloth, in a rubber-padded metal case, with dessicant bags to reduce moisture. It is used and cleaned at least once a week, and always put away oiled inside and out.

I wouldn't store anything in a case because of possible moisture issues. I feel they should be allowed air circulation. The oil would absorb into whatever they're wrapped in so low and behold ...no oil. But I also walk around the house with one in my waistband. Unloaded of course. But that's just me.

The nylon is not hydroscopic, but I don't know about the cell filler. I store guns, when not in a heated safe, in a wool sock. The socks protects a fair bit from dings and scratches and wicks moisture away from the metal.

I wouldn't keep it in a holster unless you were wearing it...I just got a 686 no dash that was stored in a nylon/fabric flap holster ....for probally 20 years in the glovebox ... In Louisana...the holster had started breaking down an the gun was rusted solid...mainly the trigger hammer and sight...it is cleaning up now...but the pitting on the frame will never be able to be fixxed...If you properly care for them and don't leave it in there you won't have such troubles...

Do not store ANY gun in ANY holster for ANY significant amount of time unless you can live with the finish issues and devaluation that WILL develop.
FWIW, I store mine in those plastic /egg crate lines hard cases. Take them down NLT twice a year and wipe down. No issues in 25 years of this practice.

a good gun rug is fine for storage but i would not leave a gun in a holster for more than a day or two without a rub down.

My 617, a stainless gun, has been in a Size 3 Uncle Mike's and it definitely showed rubmarks at the muzzle and underlug after just a few times in and out.

The 17-6 is a blued gun with the underlug as the 617, isn't it?
I would not put a blued gun in this holster.

I don't have anything new to add except that I've seen nothing but bad results from storing firearms in cases or holsters. Don't do it. RIG grease/oiled flannel/dehumidified gun safes are all good solutions.

Not a good idea. I do keep mine (M&P's) in the cases they came in with the paper. BUT they are in and out constantly and wiped down before they go back in. Anything long turm is left out in the cabnet and wiped down reg.

Well said.

Tyvek seems like a very good wrapping for a stored gun and is what my diamondback is wrapped in. It breaths and it can't deteriorate or stick to the gun. Sheels uses it too, for gun sales without the box.

The typical advice is not to store ANY gun in ANY holster. That said, police "store" their guns in holsters 8 hours per day, and many leave them in the holsters even when off duty. Of course, many police guns look like they have been dragged on a chain behind the patrol car.
