Carbine Williams

Interesting movie. The character played by Stewart was more sympathetic than the real life Williams. An article in The American Rifleman detailed some of his life w/ attention to his involvement in the M-1 Carbine. I do wonder just how many people's lives were destroyed by the simple criminalization of beverage alcohol. Something that had been completely legal since before the founding of this nation, something that was so popular that Geo. Washington was one of the largest distillers in the era, by the stroke of a pen becomes a criminal enterprise. Just got to wonder what those folks were thinking. Maybe... maybe they weren't really thinking.

In my area many families of that era made moonshine. It was about the only source of income during the depression. Without it lots more folks would have lost their farms, etc. I know of a church where the money to build it came from the sale of moonshine liquor made in the local area. Don't know how things might have been with Williams and his family. But that was the experience of many in this area.

My mother was a flapper; she told me she drank more during Prohibition than any other time, before or after.

I think they hinted at....

Just watched the movie again and it's still entertaining. Although it's no doubt not quite realistic, it's still good.

I think they hinted at some of his negative traits in the movie but without knowing the story. One scene I remember he was really obsessing about guns. Another showed his frustration when things didn't turn out right. But yeah, the movie painted him in a good light he didn't completely deserve.

An entertaining movie to be sure. Besides anything with Jimmy Stewart in it is alright with me.

The Volsted act did more to promote crime in this country than any other one thing I can think of. That coupled with the fact it was during the later part of the depression there were lots of millionaires came out of that era.

I guess it´s not in the film, but do not forget his creation of the floating chamber for the Colt .22 LR conversion unit to be used in the 1911.
Regards, Ray
