Care for a Cigar?

When I was a lad, my Dad would yell: "Sandy, go to the shop and get me some 1/4X20 bolts." (or wood screws or spark plugs or something) And I would ask him where to find it and he always said they were in a Half & Half tobacco can or a cigar box.
Folks, these instructions didn't narrow search at all! Every thing was in Half & Half cans or cigar boxes, and if they were labeled it was usually wrong.
I still have some old H&H cans although I don't smoke that brand. I also enjoy cigars in moderation(only one at a time). And I can't pass up a nice cigar box.
Sometimes you get a box that's just the right size and has the proper decoration. Please note the logo on the box.

A good cigar box is a thing of beauty. I like the red Opus X boxes, Fuente 858 boxes, Excalibur and JR Ultimate unfinished cedar boxes....

Close, but no Cigar. ;)

Spanish Cedar is hygroscopic, so it both absorbs and releases moisture.
If the wood was dry when the gun was put into the box, the interior of the box will tend to stay dry.
On the other hand, if the wood started out with a high moisture content, the box would be more suited for storing cigars than guns.

Spanish Cedar acts as a moderator to prevent (slow down) the rapid changes in humidity that damage cigars.
A new humidor has to be preconditioned (brought up to the 70% RH range and stabilized) before cigars are placed in it.

I use Spanish Cedar lined cabinets (re-purposed cigar humidifiers) with Goldenrods installed for storing powder, primers, dies and other stuff I want to keep dry.

Pilgrim6a's S&W "Puro" will probably be just fine as long as the people he shows it to don't drool too much over the rare cigar box. :D
 
One of my favorite things to do in the summer here in Colorado is to take a day off work and head up to this shooting area at about 9000' in the mountains:

The only thing better is a good cigar box filled with good cigars.

Empty cigar boxes are one of the greatest thing for storing assorted "guy stuff." Not only do we have the fun of hiding our goods but we can do it in a work of graphic art.

Not tonight, but I smoked a very nice Rocky Patel The Edge Natural last night. ;)
 
Confession: I've been known to bum one off my baby brother on the rare occasion I get to sit in on a poker game or go fishing with him. It's been forever, and it's just as well since Mr. Wrench is not fond of any smoking.

Maybe my brother and I need to have a fishing trip soon.

I'm a cigar idiot though, and all I know is "I like this one" or "who in the world rolled up chicken feathers in old shoe leather?" as far as distinction goes.
 
So,... I shouldn't keep the Baby Luger in the Dutch Masters box?
Well it's a 642 that spends most of its time in my hip pocket. I'm not worried about rust. I got it to try to wear out.
 
Just picked up a Punch, an Arturo Fuente, and some cheap A&C Grenadiers this afternoon. I've been craving a smoke for about a year now and finally gave in. Not sure, but I'll have one of them this weekend.
 
I have been known to drive some people to drink. Now I have caused people to smoke. If I can get you to go shooting and/or fishing on Sunday my work here will be done!
 
Capto-come to Colo and we can shoot and smoke some nice cigars. You don't tell Mr about the cigars and I wont tell my GF (who doesn't approve either) :) I have found that Hoppes #9 covers the tobacco smell rather well.


P.S. smoked a nice Rocky Patel while watching the final show of topshot.
 
Getting ready for my annual Prairie Dog hunt in a few weeks. One item on the to do list is pick up some good cigars for the evening gun cleaning, scotch drinking session. Almost as much fun as popping Prairie Dogs, sitting on the big porch with a tall single malt & water and a 858 cleaning guns and swapping tales.
 
I used to smoke cigars with a best friend, who has since moved away, and my Dad, who has since stopped smoking stogies at 83 (why bother now!). Anyrate, for probably a year I have been craving a decent smoke, and I went by my old tobacco store yesterday and picked up the ones I mentioned earlier. I've forgotten most of what I knew about cigars, and they didn't have my favorite, a Macanudo Portofino. So, I picked up the Punch and AF for 'good stuff' and a box of A&C for cheapies.

And fortunately, my wife supports just about anything I do, so I don't have to sneak them in!

I don't know if I can wait till the weekend, but I'm thinking the Punch and a glass of The Glenlivet might make a nice Saturday night on the porch.
 
Smoked a Cain F robusto today, bought a few Opus #5 and AVO Heritage short robusto cigars, and picked up a couple nice empty Pleiades cigar boxes that might be useful as handgun boxes. :) Or useful some way.
 
Just checked in at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas and am about to fire up a cigar on the balcony. After a long day of traveling it seems like the right thing to do. ;)
