It's that time again and I want your input. Do you use a commercial company, rent a machine or own your own carpet shampooer?

I am thinking of renting a Rug Doctor unit at the local grocery store. I borrowed a relative's carpet cleaner the last time, but it left streaks on the carpet even after I went over it, first one direction and then the other.

Rug Doctors are no guarantee of a clean shampooer. I've heard some tales of dirt left behind.

We use a commercial company here at the building. The benefits are insurance, quality commerical equipment, and quality chemicals. You can sometimes find a coupon special.

At home, we have a Bissell. It's a good cleaner but not as thorough as a commercial job. It's simply not as powerful as a truck-mounted model.

What Barb said....

We use a Hoover steam cleaner about once every two week to keep the carpets looking decent, but once a year will get the pro's in. The truck-mounted machine uses hotter steam/water, has more power, and the pros have better cleaning solvents...

We keep an eye out for their specials and get them in when the prices are lower...

I had to do mine 2 years after a pipe burst in my apartment. Rented a machine, also I did them 2 days running to save rental charges on the machine. They came out fine.

have a hoover at home for monthly clean and have the pros come in once a years

I use a professional company.A friend works for them-he does a great job[i clean twice a year].

Use a cup of amonia in per gallon of water in the machine and forget all the over priced soaps and desudzers.

I had a $300 Bissel and wasn't too impressed with it. You had to keep filling it with hot water and I don't think it did near as good a job as the professional truck mounted steam machines, and most the carpet companies will recommend steam over the dry chemical cleaning machines.

IRRC I paid $25 rental for a cleaning machine, another $25 or so for cleaning solution. Biggest annoyance in shampooing carpets is in the drying, I don't know if the professionals have any way to speed that up.

Have a home rug shampoo machine. Really don't like carpet cleaning strangers viewing whats inside my house.

Same here but it's not easy keeping it clean with my two little ones running around...

I use a Hoover SteamVac. I also add some MEAN GREEN cleaner to the Hoover Deep Cleansing solution. It works great and that's what I've been doing this week. Mean Green does wonders on pet stains.

For me, RugDoctor is a pain to use. I bought a Hoover Spinscrub. Works well. If your carpets are really dirty, you might be better off having a pro service clean it the first.

Thanks for the input. Well, the wife and I had some gift cards laying around, so we went to the store and bought a Bissell carpet cleaner. I hope it works out. I'll let you know.

We don't have wall to wall, so we roll them up and take them to a company that have these huge tanks where they are washed. They come back neat as a pin wrapped in brown paper.

The Bissell 9200 worked well. It has a heat boost that raises the temperature of the water. It took a long time to clean two rooms and a hallway, but I'm happy with the performance. The Bissell was on sale for $180 (usually $200). I used some Bissell concentrated liquid. After I went through that, I had some Blue Lustre Clean and Vac left over. I used some of that and it seemed to work a little better than the Bissell concentrated liquid.
