I have a Michigan CCP, and will be on vacation in Ohio and Indiana this month, and I need to know the common rules. Like prohibited places, and if I need to carry on my body at all times. I believe in Ohio you are not allow to carry in the car console. Is there a website I can use? I have Googled, and found many rules, but they are in legalese.

For the best and most accurate information, go to the state's
website and research their concealed carry laws.
All states have them posted. It should be an easy google search.
Best of luck, and enjoy your trip.

Try goggling ccw reciprocity. That will bring up multiple sites, check a few or all of them. They are sometimes slow to update their info. With a little work you can also check Indiana & Ohio state specific sites. Have a safe & fun trip.

Do a google search on "ohio ccw handbook" - the second link should be to a handbook put out by the Attorney General on CCW. Good for basics - not too much legalese.

One thing I found, was that it is actually against the law to enter an establishment that is posted. Here in Virginia the most they can do is ask you to leave and if you don't you can then possibly be charged with trespassing.

When I was in Ohio, they were pretty strict about prohibited and posted places. All violations were originally felonies. Things have improved over the years, but definitely get the latest info.

You MUST immediately inform in all official encounters with police.

Just don't enter crappy Ma. They"ll throw ya in the clink. Ma. does not recognize permits from other states. Hell they won't even sell ammo to non-residents. Hey it's Ma.what do you expect!!

First, Michigan does NOT issue a Concealed Carry Permit. What Michigan issues is a Concealed Pistol License and it ONLY applies to Handguns. So what's the big deal, in some states the carry permit can apply to weapons other than firearms such as Mace or a Taser.

Second, as a Michigan resident with family in Ohio I can tell you that the two state share a nearly identical list of Banned places. IIRC the most significant difference is that in Ohio you may carry into a bar as long as you are NOT consuming ANY alcohol. It's also a criminal offense to enter a posted location where in Michigan it's a Civil infraction. So, keep your eyes open for No Weapons notices. Ohio and Michigan both have a duty to notify when stopped by the police but in Ohio a failure to notify is a Felony where in Michigan it's a misdemeanor. Pay attention to that difference.

Note, whether carrying or not I always notify when stopped because it will come up if they do a records check and could result in a rather peeved police officer. It's been my experience over more that 40 years of driving that making a police officer angry will result in a ticket and making him feel at ease will often result in a simple warning. BTW, I had 4 traffic citations in the 70's, one in the 80's, none in the 90's, and one in 2014. As for warnings, I wouldn't even attempt to add them up but it's a lot. So I know from first hand experience that being friendly to the police results in much fewer traffic citations.

Pierre, thanks for the tip about "ohio ccw handbook". And S&WNut, the web site was what I was also looking for. Thanks, I am all set.

I have an iPhone app called Legal Heat and it keep current state laws and reciprocal agreements up to date.

A little off topic but it would certainly be nice if all the states could somehow "unify" their conceal carry laws but I doubt that will ever happen.

I have a MI CPL and also an Arizona CCW License. (We winter in AZ). In AZ, you do not need a CCW to conceal carry. But, you CAN take the classes and get a state CCW License. I took the class as I think it is not only a good idea to have the license, but to keep abreast of the laws as well.

Some of the laws are "quirky" - example:

In AZ . . if you carry but do not have a CCW . . .. you cannot enter a bar carrying. If you have a CCW, you can carry in a bar but you cannot drink. (Which I totally agree with). There are also certain "parks" you can carry in if you have a CCW but you can't if you are not licensed.

What it boils down to . . you need to keep abreast of the laws and any changes. Some very good "resources" posted here - thanks!
