Cartridge collecting?

Years ago I had a pretty good collection that I lost. I'd like to start again but I don't remember what I did before. Any suggestions? Are there sites I can go to to buy individual cartridges?

I picked up most of mine at gun shows. I got most of the common ones and stopped at about 200 or so. The British big game cartridges were too danged expensive. I remember that a 600 Nitro was going for about $35.00 back in the eighties. Can't imagine what they are worth today. Today I don't even have the 500 and 460 S&Ws, 454 Cassul and other super power handgun cartridges.
I once tried to find a ctg, but everybody looked at me like I was nuts.

Yeah, I'll never own or shoot a .700 Nitro but I can own and hold one of the cartridges. I just hope I don't snort the powder. I don't need that monkey on my back.

A couple of sites come to mind. First, Wards Auction, https://wardscollectibles.com is a great cartridge auction site, but they only have a few auctions per year. A lot of us collectors swap among ourselves. I have been collecting for over 40 years, but am not a addict. When I find old cartridges, many times I will buy them all if the price is right. After a while most collectors specialize. I prefer and collect them all but 30-30's and large bottleneck cartridges trip my trigger. Have you chosen any particular caliber? What is your biggest needs? I may have extras to swap or sell.

I've been picking them up at the local gun shows for the last 25 years or so. Also tend to find them in the curio cases of off-the-beaten track antique shops. Scored a whole cigar box full of late 19th- / early 20th-century stuff in Canon City like that for a song in 2007.

I got my .700 Nitro ($50) and a cool .577-450 Martini paper-patch ($30), both Kynoch, at Cherry Creek Shooting Ctr when Alan Duckworth was still running the place, probably 1999 or so.

Since you're local: there is a Rocky Mountain Cartridge Collectors' Association. They have one show/meet per year in July in Golden. The president of RMCCA is in Englewood. He does not do email or internet, but is always buying, selling, trading. If you'd like his contact info, PM me.

As others have stated gun shows are a good source. I have several large cartridges. Starting at the left .50 BMG, 20mm, 30mm, 75mm, and 90mm.
