Was a LGS the other day and saw a Model 22-4, 45 acp. Guy said he thought it was made in 2006. It is NIB. I LOVE case colored guns and am thinking very hard about getting this one. The price is $986. So that got me to thinking, how available are any S&W case colored revolvers over the years? I looked in the standard catalog 3ed. but I am not really clear on what I read. So I guess my question is are case colored revolvers readily available? Or did I run across a rather rare thing to be able to buy?

thanks,

Harrydale

These were made in certain models (models 21, 22 and certain models in the Heritage series). Turnbull did some if not all of the finishes. Don't know what current pricing is for this one but searches of sales prices online should tell you. Hope this is helpful.

I have been interested too. I havent seen one, just pictures. I had assumed they were some sort of painted or baked on finish like on rugers. This is the first that I heard turnbull done them.

I've seen them and wasn't impressed. Had a chance to buy one fairly cheap and turned it down. One thing that bothered me was an apparent area of corrosion (or appearance of corrosion) in the case colored finish on the left side right above the grip. That bothered me a lot. Could have just been that one gun saw some abuse. I'd really like to know if others have seen a similar appearance of corrosion... or if it was just that one gun.

I saw a case colored 22-4 years ago, and regret not purchasing it. The price you were quoted is a bit on the high side based upon what I've seen, but not out of line, especially for a NIB case colored model. Not as tough to find, the standard blue 22-4 will save you 100s.

They've made a few in recent years. In my view they are not very common. Some M10, M15's, & M17's were made in 2001. Some M40's a few years later. The M22 & M24's some in 2011 and I think another run a few years before that. Those are just the one's I've seen. Usually in a Heratage two-piece box. The latest M24 I saw, which was 2011 production, did NOT have the lock.

On these case hardened guns, they are basically bare metal so you have to either keep them oiled or waxed, right?

The "new frame" sort of gives it away. Though it looks like is does not have the lock. I wonder if Smith still has the equipment to make an old style frame, with the replaceable cylinder stop stud and hammer mounted firing pin?
Poor curmudgeonly old traditionalist me. :( I'm still holding out hope that they go back to the old style cylinder stop... and kill that ugly lock too. :o

I sold a case colored model 21-4 sometime back and it was a beautiful gun but too pretty for me to use the way I use them. I bought and sold it here on the forum. I have the buy/trade/sell habit that is had to break. I can think of many I should have kept.

Macinaw you are probably right, I just think case colored guns are gorgeous! Is yours in the picture a Model 22-4?

Yes, mine is a 22-4 Just a small spray of Rem Oil before it goes into the safe to keep the colors bright. The stocks that came with it are painful to shoot allot. other that that I don't plan on getting rid of this one.

They are somewhat rare.

But as you see they do not appeal to everyone.

I like them so if you pass, give one of us the phone number to the shop. I would buy it at that price

Boys I got one, a 24-5. I like it a lot. It is just wonderful to hold and shoot. I especially like the work Turnbull did and am really fond of the high front sight.

The 22-4 is a lock gun.
We have seen some languish on store shelves in the past and sell
at cost just to move them. Somewhere in the $800. range for the
Case color model.

I have my 25-11 in 45 Colt, and added a 25-12 no lock in 45 ACP recently.

The 25-11 is pictured in this thread.

Stunning guns, definitely my cup of tea.

I will add a picture of my pair in this post tomorrow.

Scuttlebut is that Turnbull did All the Case color work for Smith and Wesson.

Many frames were shipped and the loss percentage was pretty high
as some were destroyed in the process.

I have HEARD that Smith & Wesson has cut ties with Mr Turnbull permanently.

The COMPANY Smith&Wesson is becoming more and more about
business and less about aesthetics.
It is a sign of our modern times and bottom dollars.

Good luck
