I heard about these guys on the History Channel this AM and did some research when I got home. I was interested when they reported they were armed with .22 pistols. I immediately assumed K-22's, but found an article that reported they had Colt Woodsman. Really interesting reading about these rough and tough GI's.

I have read about these folks for a number of years, long before they became well known. It is always interesting to read posts about peoples opinion as to why and how they used their 22 pistols. There are some interesting theories, It really bums them out to find out that they didn't fight with the guns but was there only to hunt food so they could live off the land. Since the Colt was lightweight, accurate, and extremely durable, it was the first choice. Now they did not have to stay close to camp for food. They could wander vast distances. There was once a movement to make 2 guns Alaska's official guns. The pre 64 model 70 Winchester in 30-06 and the Colt Woodsman pistol. At one time a monument was planned for the 22 pistol. It was such an important part of the civilizing of Alaska for the same reason the Cutthroat's used them. My old Woodsman has been with me for nearly 4 decades and is under the seat of my van as we speak. It has little bluing left on it anywhere, the checkering on the walnut grips is beaten flat and has many scars. The old Heiser lined flap holster it resides in has remarkable remained in better condition. It was MY first choice as a handgun to carry as an elk guide and my decades of wandering the west.
