Dog229 Here,
I came across some CCI green Tag 40 gr. and was wanting to know opinions on how the 617's like them. I was never able to find this ammo in the past so it is new to me to use. I also have a question on copper wash bullet vs. coated bullet in is their any
pro's and con's ?
thanks for any opinions

I run mostly copper washed value pack ammo through the various k frame .22s. But that's not to say the next lot of Green Tag might not be "the bomb" in something! Problem now days is finding enough ammo to both test and then buy in quantity.

Some things I've noticed to be generally true:
1) Winchester .22 LR is not the most accurate in anything. (But WW .22 Magnum is the best by far in my 648. By a factor of 3-4x over CCI! )
2) Remington Thunderbolt is generally wretched. Rem Golden Bullet value packs can be great or poo, depending on the lot. Remington Target variations are usually OK to excellent.
3)Federal is almost never terrible, some is excellent, even some lots of Value Pack, but it's not consistent. (I'm down to less ~1500 rds of my favorite lot that has been the hunting and accuracy standard for the 617s and some others.)
4) Wolf Match has been a good buy, but not worth the extra expense in the revolvers.

Basically, buy at least a little of whatever you find. Test it quickly so if there's more to be had of a particular lot that's exceptionally good, you can buy more. (If supply ever catches up, that is!) And often what's not the best in one firearm may do fine in another, sometimes. Or can be put to use for different purposes.

The Value Pack has been the best buy of these samples. The American Eagle is OK, but way dirty. The Match isn't any better accuracy wise in the revolver, but has been good in some rifles. Have just purchased about a 1000 Auto Pistol match rounds, but mostly for the High Standard. May try some in the long 617 and report back. Green tag as well, but it won't be current production, as I haven't seen any in ages.

Green tag can change wildly from lot to lot. If you find some that works don't get to excited the next batch may be terrible.

THE OP'S QUESTION, WHILE INTERESTING, WILL NOT PROVIDE HIM WITH INFO REGARDING HOW WELL THE GREEN TAG WILL WORK IN HIS PARTICULAR 617. MY PARTICULAR 617 LIKES CCI MINI MAG. OTHERS MAY NOT…..

I AGREE WITH THE GENERALITIES LISTED BY jaymoore ABOVE. SOMETIMES SHOOTERS JUST HAVE TO RUN WHATEVER THEY CAN FIND ON STORE SHELVES, IF ANYTHING, OR RESORT TO PAYING RIDICULOUS PRICES FOR THEIR FAVORITE BRAND ON GUN BROKER….……...

Like others have stated, judging ANY .22 ammo can be difficult, because of so many variables. What's terrible in one quality firearm may be awesome-accurate in another.

Strangest thing I've experienced - my Ruger M77 SS .22 rifle stacks Remington 'Yellow Jackets' and 'Viper', on top of each other at 50-75 yards. They're 'hyper-velocity' .22 rounds - they're not supposed to be that accurate. I've never seen ANY hyper-velocity rounds show any impressive accuracy, except in this instance.

One that's pretty much disappeared, was Winchester's 'T22' .22 LR SV ammo. They were accurate in most everything.

The CCI Green Tag was a "Match Grade" ammo, and years ago my bullseye guns liked it very well, including my Mod 17's. They something happened and several of my shooting buddies and myself couldn't stand it. They did something with the sizing, and my HS Victor wouldn't come completely to battery, same thing happened to two others. I have not used it since. Every .22 rather than a revolver or Semi-auto is "finicky" and two identical guns may not like the same ammo. You have to test it in your particular gun. In today's ammo shortage environment, you don't have the selection we had just 5 or so years ago when you could go to your favorite store and pick from a dozen different brands on the shelf. Hopefully those days will return.

I see the Green Tag once in a while at Academy, but it is always priced in the $14/15 area per 100. I'm not up to paying that price, so have not fired any of it.
