We have a new Beretta Bobcat 21A .22 pistol. Bought based on discussions here and range buddies. Tried some standard velocity Remington ammo, and gun didn't cycle at all. we have been told to use nothing but CCI Mini-Mags in the little gun. Any thoughts here ??:o

Yep, got one, mini-mags work fine. After several hundred rounds, you may find it is less picky. Mine does not like the big box Remington .22s.
Added hint: Be sure to put a spot of grease where the slide cocks the hammer when fired.;)

The last one I tried wouldn't cycle anything 100%. It was closer with an old box of Stingers I tried, but still not super reliable. And yes, it was cleaned before shooting :)

Mine will run best with 40 gr High Velocity RN and not necessarily limited to CCI Mini-Mags. If I'm likely to have a failure it usually happens as the first round in the magazine fails to feed after the round placed in the tip up barrel has been fired. My round count with the 21A is probably still in the hundreds and not in the thousands and I seem to think it's getting progressively better suggesting to me that there is a break in period at work.

.22s tend to be finicky. Very small pistols tend to be finicky. The overlap in your case could be a predictor of higher levels of finickiness. Answer - plan on a decent break-in period, and trying different ammo as you go along. Once you find something that is reliable in that pistol, be grateful and don't expect to be able to generalize.

The little .22 auto needs a LOT of break in time to smooth out the slide and working parts and relax that recoil spring a little to help out slide speeds.

It needs at least 300 rounds of ammo, just to do this...........

Now, try out your SD ammo, if you really think this weapon will be used for this purpose.

A BIG knife might be better ?

CCI Mini mags are good in mine. But CCI Velocitors or Stingers work much better. Standard velocity anything is not good - frequently fail to cycle, feed or eject.

I bought some of the Federal Punch 22lr expressly for this application...

MiniMags & other high velocity rounds have worked well for me in the past as well.

Cheers!

I've been trying to find some of those Federal rounds in the belief it might make the .22 a little more potent and still feed without failure. Haven't found any to try yet...

In a past life I owned one and it was more reliable with the Mini-Mags but wasn't perfect about feeding. One day the first shell snapped and when that happens it is a complicated process to get another shell in the chamber. A person couldn't run fast enough to give me another one. Larry

Once upon a time I had a 21A and the Taurus version of same at the same time. I ended up sellng the Beretta. I loved its jewel-like appearance, but it never functioned 100%, although it came closest with Stingers. On the other hand, I cannot remember a single malfunction with the Taurus, with any ammo.

I have an older one, a worn one with the wooden grips.

I can get it to run ok with CCI Blazers, I think they might be the lowest velocity required. None of the bulk Remington, Winchester, Federal, etc. None of the Aguila I have. Nothing standard-velocity.

Kinda a PITA, simply because I also have a High Standard Sport King, which needs standard velocity (no HV). The HV stuff will break the HS.

With the right ammo, the little Beretta is fun as heck.

Do you intend to carry it, or is it just for range fun? If carrying, try the Winchester Silvertip ammo. Like the Federal Punch, it is supposedly optimized for shorter barrels. I don't have the Beretta (yet), but these seem to work well in my Ruger LCP II.

I have a 950 B in .22 short

It will only cycle with Remington high velocity.

And with a little practice it’s fairly accurate at 15 meters

Not another Beretta 21a Thread!
The Bear Gun Thread for small Pistols enthusiasts!
Shot mine again just the other day.
Mostly functioned with MiniMags and Stingers.
Thinking more than ever, as long as the Ammo is hot - High Velocity. -
It will function as long as its Cold and Clean!
Today, this is subject to change without warning or reason-
I’m thinking Stingers. Hot ammo, chrome case.
Also shot my Ruger LCP II 22.
I like it more every time I shoot it!

I run CCIs through my 21a--minimags (solids or HP, both work well) and the only box of Stingers I had. Functioning has been 99%--had one FTE but I don't remember what round it was, could have been some SV for all I know.

Check out Paul Harrell's videos--he shoots the Federal Punch, Winchester Silvertip and CCI Mini Mags and Stingers. Spoiler alert--he likes Remington Vipers.

My shooting buddy has a Beretta 21a and his gun only likes the 36gr Remington 22 Viper ammo. Its the most a curate ammo in his gun.

In a pinch he can use the 40gr CCI Velocitor ammo but it's not quite as accurate as the 22 Viper ammo. (in his gun of course)
