Will be traveling thru IL to MI next week. If I am reading the law correctly I can carry on my TN ccw while in the car. I must lock it up prior to exiting the vehicle.

Any helpful insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Russ

That is pretty much how I read it, have a few friends in the Humboldt (sp?) TN area that come into Ill and drive w/guns inside car.

The site that delineates all the rules is the Illinois State Police (IL Concealed Carry License)

Hopefully your route will keep you south of I-80 and you shouldn't have a need to clean your gun when you arrive in MI.

I've made a few runs east-west in that area and have always avoided IL if I have a handgun in the car. Not an expert on any of this but I strongly recommend that you not have a handgun in your vehicle while in IL. If you must - then I would suggest having a handgun unloaded, inside a locked container in the trunk/back of the car with ammo in a separate locked container.

I would go around Illinois before I would tempt fate and enter that state with a firearm. I'm pretty sure they don't honor anyone else's carry permit.

the above is an accurate statement from this former resident.

Brother in law is a practicing attorney in Il , I quote him stating , "as an out of state resident , if you have the need carry a firearm thru our state, find an alternate route".

MAKES SENSE TO ME???

They come down hard on licensed out of Stater's, but if you are a resident gang banger, it's cool??? What's wrong with this picture? ;)

Just lock it up while you are going through Illinois if you are worried about being stopped and you'll be ok. If you can legally carry where you are leaving from and where you are heading to then no state can restrict you from transporting it through from point A to B...

Your 100% right about traveling with a gun.
But the way I read the ILL law, you must leave the gun in the car when you stop anywhere in ILL.

If for some strange reason a local LEO stops you while walking to the house or your motel room with your gun locked in a box it is still considered illegal carry/concealing of a firearm.

I lived in Chicago 60 years before I got fed up and left 6 years ago.
I would NEVER bring a gun in that state, and that's the reason I'll NEVER go back.

5-10 years in Statesville Prison for stuffed pizza No Thanks.

Good friend of mine lives near Joliet, I'll. He went online and printed the rules for me. I travel between Michigan and St Louis, Mo. several times a year. I can (on my Mi. permit) carry only in my car thru I'll. I cannot take the loaded gun out of my car. If/when I exit my car, the gun must remain inside and the car locked. I make a point of stopping for fuel and food before I enter the state of I'll. Then I do not stop again untill I exit the state. I also avoid I-80 and the Chicago area. Suggest you contact the Ill state police for advice.

Thanks for all the info. Will be leaving the gun behind.

While your in Illinois, if you would be so kind could you stop at Mr D's Shish Kabob's 6656 W Diversey Ave Chicago and get me 6 Kabob's to go? And while I'm wishing how about Jimmy's Red Hot's on Grand Ave & Pulaski Rd for 6 dogs all the way.
Will meet you on the Missouri side of the Mississippi.
Thanks.

Would be glad to do it but we will not stop in IL. Gas up in KY then drive straight through. Same as when we come back.

Hate to tell you, but your still leaving yourself up to be arrested in Illinois even doing all that.
What would you tell the cops after reporting your gun is stolen in that hotel room? Or if you defended yourself with it?
Like the old saying.
Visit Illinois on vacation, leave on probation.
If your lucky.

IL does not honor any other CCW licenses, but the doom and gloom about simple transportation is greatly exaggerated. Unloaded and cased is 100% legal. I suggest visiting the linked IL State Police site. Also note the locations of the IL bashers. They aren't from and have probably never lived in Illinois. Illinois isn't New Jersey.

I grew up in Illinois, currently live in Indiana, and frequently drive through Chicago to visit family in Wisconsin. I'm still here.

Edit: why do you need to go through IL to get to Michigan?
