I am hoping to buy a 6 shot S&W 617 in the near future if I am able to find one with a square butt for a sensible price.
This will become a project gun with a few alterations I would like to do such as a red ramp front site, white outline rear, factory target grips and possibly a polish job.
I have always had a preference for the early no dash models with the “flashed chrome” finish on the triggers and hammers but don’t like my chances of finding one here in Australia.
So I am thinking that if I can buy a gun with the color case hardened trigger and hammer maybe I can have them refinished with the Cerakote “Satin Silver H151” coating.
Has anyone here had any experience with Cerakote and am I likely to have any problems fitting the trigger and hammer back in place with the additional thickness of the coating. This refitting would probably be done by our local gunsmith although I am thinking I’d would like to have a crack at doing the job myself if it didn’t look too difficult.
If anyone is interested in having a look at Cerakote here are the links to their firearms coatings and picture gallery.

Mate I'm in Brisbane - I bought a 686 a month ago and did a little work to it, including taking it apart and polishing the external, visible parts of the hammer and trigger. They end up silver like "chrome" ceramic exhaust header coating - shiny-ish and silver but not a mirror smooth surface.

I did it with auto metal polish. While I was in there I also lapped together the rebound slide and frame with the same polish and man what a difference in double action! I thought it was pretty good anyway but I can tell a substantial smoothness difference and the trigger is actually lighter.

Cerakote goes on with a 1-2 mil thinkness and will have little to no impact on reassembly tolerences. I refinished 2 AR's with it and it wears like iron. I would not hesitate using Cerakote on any firearm. Botttom line, great product!
