I have a ‘70’s vintage model 15 with some wear and tear on it. I’d like to treat it to an attractive and protective finish. Are there strong advantages either way between cerakote and Robar?
Cerakote has worked extremely well for me on a RIA 1911-A1 that was badly in need of refinishing. Do not think it would work so well for a revolver cylinder. Robar would likely be a better choice. Hope this helps. Sincerely. bruce.
Cerakote is a baked on paint like finish. I'm not a huge fan (sorry).
Robar is a very thin electroless nickel treatment. It offers good corrosion and wear resistance, but it marks easily.
I consider industrial hard chrome the best aftermarket finish. Metaloy, Metalife and Armoloy all tough as nails and offer extreme corrosion and wear resistance. Guns with this coating are often mistaken as prototype stainless steel versions.
I have one gun cerakoted - it's ok. Nothing amazing. I have several guns NP3d from Robar - pistols, hunting rifles and even a complete Noveske .308 AR in full NP3 including internals. NP3 costs more but over the lifetime is well worth it. Fantastic finish, very durable, wipe it clean....still the best finish going for a hard use gun that won't get cleaned every 12 hours.
