I didnt get the full story but, the time you have to spend for instruction has been reduced. I hope the fee was as well. There's more but I didnt hear it all in time.

Hey Ringo, if you don't mind me asking, what department are you with?
You can PM me if you'd rather. :)

Will someone who does have the details on this please post?

Thanks for the heads-up post, Ringo. My daughter is thinking of getting her license this year.

I believe classroom training has been reduced to a maximum of six hours. No more revolver only or pistol, a license is a license. Refresher courses no longer required for renewal. That's what I remember for when the law passed.

The change occurred effective 9/1/2013. Best thing is that CHL renewals can be done online at Texas.gov website.

If I'm not mistaken the fee for veterans is now $25.00 and if memory serves the fingerprinting fee was $10.00. Most of the courses I have seen around here are $70.00. Texas encourages chl, at least for now.

Hi Ron, I worked for a State of TX agency as a Peace Officer starting in the 90s and wanted to make it a career but my health deteriorated and have been out of the game since 2000. :-))

Will send a PM anyway. :-))

Quite welcome and, the only thing I can add off-hand is-the training time was 10 hours and now dropped to four hours. After I get back from my Drs appt today, ill see if i can find out more? They ever so briefly covered it in local news last night.

Also, and I dont know if this is everywhere or not? but you can use a .22 handgun if you wish but can carry anything you wish larger caliber.

The minimum caliber for an applicant's range qualification is .32, but any caliber (and both action types) may be carried once the CHL is issued. (Instructors must still qualify with both semi-auto and revolver, minimum calibers 9mm. and .38.)
