Our local County Animal Shelter was closed for several weeks because of a Distemper scare, no intake of animals, no adoption, no visitors to the kennel. This poor guy, a stray Australian Cattle Dog was stuck in limbo, no owner to pick him up, no one to adopt him. Only this pic on the internet to draw interest to his plight:

He had been cleared by a vet that he was free of Distemper, so he must have been vaccinated by his previous owner.

We have had several ACD's, also known as "Blue Heelers" before, and they are a wonderful breed. We contacted the shelter and let them know we would take him if no others were interested, so he wouldn't be put down. We thought for sure others would be interested, but no. The shelter contacted us a few days before Christmas and said no one would obligate to pay his adoption fee, take him to the vet and get him neutered, so he would be put down the day after Christmas if we didn't take him. So, we picked him up on Christmas day. This is a pic of him at our house, obviously a little more at ease:

We have named him "Josey Wales", after Clint Eastwoods most famous outlaw character. He is a wonderful dog, very well behaved, walks good on a leash, housebroken, and very appreciative of his new home. He is bonding to my wife, right now he's resting at the foot of her recliner.

He is apprehensive about vehicle rides, I wanted to take him for an ATV ride, but he was still a bit skittish for that, we'll work up to that:

I am thankful that the staff at the Animal Shelter were pro-active in working the Internet to get this guy a home, they could have waited the stray hold time and then put him down, but they kept the Internet hot until they found him a home with us...

Bless you ! Your post brought tears to my eyes.

You rescued a beautiful dog ! I'm glad (for you and Josie) the shelter worked overtime to home him.

This is my Abby, Healer and something, a rescue that's a 2 time looser, she's the sweetest dog I've had. I was going to tell her story, but I don't want to hijack your wonderful thread. I'll start my own thread someday.

Abby says thank you for rescuing my cousin !

LOL, my Healer's smarter than you honor student, and loves to ride in the truck.

Looks like he is appreciating his second chance. Love the quote from the movie, "Are you going to pull those pistols or whistle Dixie." Glad you pulled the trigger and got a new friend.

Even though the shelters try they don't always get it right. Our friend had the flu believe it or not. The shelter told us that they didn't think he would make it through the night and told us to come back should he not make it. That was 6 years ago. A little love and TLC goes a long way.

Crazyphil,

Our vet said he's about 2-3 years old. He is very smart, so I anticipate he'll be easy to train.

He's getting used to our routine, very happy to just sit near us. Sleeps through the night in his cage. Once we determine if he wants to chew stuff up or not we'll leave him uncaged for the night, let him sleep near us.

He is a handsome boy, when we took him to the vet all the ladies that work there had to make over him....
