My wife surprised me this christmas with an old gun. She obtained a Winchester 1892 38-40 wcf with serial number that corresponds to a birthdate of 1905. The rifle is in great shape, the barrel looks good. It did have a small dent on the magazine tube that I had to fix because the spring was getting hung up on it. I shot 50 rounds through it without incident. I have already bought some dies to start reloading for it. Out of curiosity does anyone have any idea what these things are worth?

Considering who gave it to you ..... it's priceless. Most of us would be tickled to have a wife give us an interesting firearm. As far as monetary value I'd hate to believe anything I'd have to say as I'm not a Winchester collector but a quick look at completed auctions on Gun Broker for similar original-looking condition octagon barrel model 1892's show prices of roughly $1000 plus or minus about $300.

John all my wife's sisters are married so no joy there for you :). G8 , I have seen so many prices that I really don't know what they are based on besides condition and age. I am not really interested in selling it, and I am sure she paid more than that since it came from brother-in-law who had it from his dad. He was having some financial difficulty and so it went to a good cause. I had to soak the barrel in some Kroil to get the magazine screw out and I am working on the receiver screws to get it cleaned up more. Like I said , I plan to shoot some cowboy loads through this beauty. It will not be a safe queen. May need to consider getting a Ruger Vaquero to match the gun or maybe luck into a peacemaker :).
