Just picked up a 629 that has some type of plastic residue around the area that would be covered by a rubber grip, such as a Hogue or Pachmayr.

The substance is very hard and wouldn't come off with Hoppe's , etc.

Any thoughts on how to clean this stuff off?

Thanks!

It's probably dried oil or grease. You may have to let it soak with the acetone. Something like Kroil should get at it just as well.

Last year I pulled the stock rubber Hogue Monogrip off my 629-3 for the first time in many years. The grip was almost glued on to the frame with the type of buildup you refer to. I chalked it up to gun oil and or cleaning solution residue build up. To get it off I used a cotton rag soaked in Shooter's Choice and a lot of vigorous finger work. Acetone would speed the process, but Shooter's Choice was the strongest solvent I had on hand.

I would suggest using brake cleaner sprayed on cloth rag.

at times I've had to resort to such as "carb cleaner" or "electrical contact cleaner" which is similar to brake cleaner....AND use 0000- steel wool pad....

CAUTION: I have been advised BLUE steel does not like this kind of cleaner.

Relube after cleaning was advised to me, and in following this process over the years, I've never had down side from using such.

I've had all kinds of goop otherwise very resistant to more moderate efforts, respond very well to this process, and I've never seen any deleterious effects.

Some WD-40 should do the trick. A hair dryer might also help.

Not a huge fan of Pachmeyers - I have had the metal come through the rubber and scratch the bluing of a few guns. It's now Factory wooden grips for me.
