Recently picked up my 642, haven't had the chance to get to the range yet but what do you guys/gals find to be the best for cleaning that is mild enough not to eat the finish. Do you all just use Hoppe's and nylon brushes or is there some other favorite solvent. Does anyone have any experience with the Frog Lube on this finish?

Thanks
Rick

I have had no issues with the finish from using CLP or MPro7.
If it is a newer gun and you carry it. You will have finish issues. At least I do with my 2 year old 642 no lock.

I have read more than once that when you get a new 642, rub renaissance wax on it.

Then only clean the gun with no ammonia like Hoppes Elite or M-Pro7.

I use M-Pro7 and it is a most excellent cleaner.

M Pro 7 and nylon brush outside- brass brush on bore and chambers- Kroil Oil ok also. If you carry it and shoot it you will get wear in the clearcoat on the edges. Nothing to worry about- no rust.

I am a big fan of "Ed's Red". This is a home mix that does everything I need a cleaning solvent to do without the solvent doing anything I DON'T want it to.

Ed's Red' Bore Cleaner

The absolute best lubricant for firearms is Dexron II or III automatic transmission fluid.

Both products are inexpensive, readily obtainable, and do a better job than many of the "gun" products.

My 4 year old 642 EDC looks like new. CLP and Renaissanse Wax. Carry it in a Mika holster.
