How long can you leave a clip loaded will it hurt the spring.

Your lifetime, if it's a decent manufacturer's magazine (a "clip" is something else - you're talking about a magazine). Engineers can explain how it's the cycling of a magazine (filling and emptying it) that wears on the spring. A quality magazine spring should be able to withstand being compressed for a very long time while still maintaining its force. Many folks here can tell you stories of trouble-free shooting of magazines that had been stored fully loaded for decades.

You're most welcome - thank you for joining us here at the forum.

Erich, THANK YOU for pointing that out. I have to admit I understand about people's misconceptions about the word "clip" due to its almost universal misuse (even people who should know better are guilty of it) but I simply can't help but wince when I hear a "Magazine" called a "clip". What's most exasperating are the number of people who angrily defend the use of "clip" to describe a "magazine", saying "it's the same thing!" and then don't want to hear it when you actually try to tell them how they are NOT the same thing.

Also consider that LEO magazines are loaded for years. The length of time the dept has a particular weapon in service. Our 92F's have been in service since 1988.

Go to the garage at a fast clip . . .

Anyhow, we should be clear to make 4x4x454 welcome and let him know that no one's picking on him.

As you can see, this is sort of a hot-button issue with a lot of folks, because "clip" is very often used in casual usage instead of "magazine."

Here's a recent blog post that may be of use to folks on the subject:

Last August I emptied a 1911A1 Colt magazine which had been filled and stored by me since 1976 or there abouts. It worked just fine.

Thanks to all I will not call a magazine a clip in the future I have been schooled.

Sigma 9mm my first auto. I have 200 rounds through it no problems. Just love it I am trying to get a hold of S&W to have the trigger worked on but cant get a hold of them. Yesterday I was out shooting twigs off of a tree. I was very pleased.

Hang onto it for a while before you call S&W and send it away to that that 'trigger worked on' after only 200 rounds. Some of the best trigger work is to shoot it a lot! You may find that it likes you better when you use a smooth 'pull' instead of a slow 'squeeze' and you can get surprising consistency firing at one round per second. That's enough time for the gun to settle back into position as you pull the trigger. Concentrate on smooth, not slow!

If you want a real trigger job that will not void your warranty, uses only S&W parts and will cost you $0.00 (did I mention that it was FREE?), contact Frank Smith at LSG Manufacturing at http://www.lsgmfg.com/ He is the factory authorized service center for S&W. I sent my SW9VE in last Saturday (2/21) and I just got a call from UPS that it will be delivered back to me today Thursday 2/26. To top it off, Frank apologized for the delay in getting the gun back to me! If the rain holds off a few more hours, I will be at the range this afternoon.

For get about those "shadetree" trigger fixes and send it to LSG (but call him first).

Happy Shooting,
Scott

Clips...magazines...you might get a kick out of this one! Went to a sporting goods store here in Billings and asked what isle the S&W magazines were on. She with great enthusiasm said she would take me there as she was headed that way anyway. The isle that she took me to was the literature and handouts section....magazine to her was an entirely different meaning that what I had in mind. I jokingly told her that these would not fit my gun very well...and she then said, " oh, you want a clip, those are over there"..LOL I said nothing to her as her enthusiasm was very high level. Just had to smile and move on...At least "I" thought it was funny. Gotta love her enthusiasm however.

Basically longer than you will live. Damaged magazines will not work because of bent or damaged feed lips or mag tube, but a good quality (S&W is good quality) magazine will last as long as you need it to last.

Yesterday, I looked at some 1006 magazines for a friend. They have been fully loaded for 24 years. The springs were fine and there were no issues. The gun has been loaded all this time, but never fired. He wanted the springs changed out for new ones "just in case," but the new ones were the same length and resistance as the old, at least as far as I could tell without technical measuring devices.

Would you suggest sending it to S&W Lone Star Guns for the work?
