I don't know why but for some reason I am wanting to put a light rail on my 4566. I know there are clip on rail mounts for Sigs, Glocks, 1911s & J Frames but I can find none for S&W autos. Any info of some one that does make them?? Thanks!!

Are you looking for something that's a non permanent mount?

If not, I saw an article about how to retro fit a non rail pistol with a picatinny rail, using rail stock for a rounded rifle receiver like a remington 700. It requires drilling and tapping the underside of frame... it looked pretty straight forward and not out of the realm of someone with moderate DIY skills.

Yep. Looking for some thing I can take off & on.

I wrote S&W to ask if a light rail could be retrofitted to my 4006 - I was going to make it my bedside gun - and the reply from the factory was: "...nope, can't be done".

Please let us know how yours turns out.

Best of luck,

Dave

Surefire makes a rail that is not permanently mounted. Trouble is they don't make one for the S&Ws. Maybe there is some cross-compatibility with one of the models they do make. IOW, maybe somebody can make it fit.

If you compare the dustcovers of the railed and conventional pistols, you'll note the dustcover is about twice as thick to resist the recoil forces. Your standard dustcover wasn't designed to hang 4 oz or so on. You can get away with it for awhile.

B-Square(?) made a light that clamped to the trigger guard. Dunno if it's still available.

CAA is making a 1911 rail that you can bolt on to the trigger guard. I am going to order one for my Springfield 1911A1. I have been looking at the pics and am wondering if it will fit a 4500 S&W. Will let you all know what happens.

Personally, I am more comfortable with the Thunder Ranch tactical light sold by Streamlight. It does not require a rail, but uses a tiger ring instead. It comes with a DVD of instruction from Clint Smith. There is also a really handy second light in the package that goes on your keyring. Outstanding package.
