Closing slide onto round in pipe

Is it OK on the 45 midsize to close the slide on a round already in the pipe? The extractor claw seems very flat and i don't want to bend it back into the breach face and damage it. Thanks in advance.

I always load my semi-autos from a magazine. I've done it the way you describe in the past without damage, but why take the chance? Especially on a self defense gun.

Dropping the slide with one in the pipe is putting a lot stress on the extractor, in time by doing this it will break, always feed from the magazine and then re-top off the mag.
