CMP Resumes Pistol Sales

I got an e-mail from CMP this morning. They're selling 1911s again.
A few changes in the rules. No more "Rounds" of sales. No more Random Generated Numbers. Its first come, first served until they're gone. Still a lifetime limit of two per customer, but you can order two at the same time if you want.
Prices went up a little, but its still a bargain.

I think I was about two months away when the shipping freeze hit. It sounds like they've improved the process, we'll see.

US bought commercial parts when they ran out of government stock. They regularly let contracts for various replacement parts over the years, such as the Israeli slides.

Don’t think it matters what CMP does.
Most of those guns are going to be parted out at the earliest opportunity and the parts flipped for a quick profit anyway.

CMP's grading system is a head scratcher. Back in early 2019, I paid extra early on for a finer grade and got a re-arsenaled 1911, while those who bought later and for less $$$ got worn but ORIGINAL FINISH examples!

Apparently, in their world, a newer & cleaner finish is preferable to a war-worn original.

I've since sold my CMP 1911 and have little desire for another.

Thanks. I was waiting. I already have a service grade but might try for a field grade this time. We'll see when or if I get a bill for a surgery I had a few weeks ago.

Good news! I got a first round field grade - a Remington Rand with the rack number still on it. A friend got the higher grade and wound up with a Colt frame and an unmarked slide, reparked way back when, and stored away until sold. It looked new. He was disappointed - he wanted what I got: one that looked like the pistol he carried in Vietnam.

Of course some guys got just what they wanted. Its luck of the draw.

Sounds like the CMP wants to get ‘em all out of the warehouse during the next four years.

Its a great program and these are great pistols - from the Army to you. Don’t let the verbage about some commercial parts dissuade you - these guns have been through the process of staying serviceable. If you want one that looks like it was stolen from the factory in 1944, these aren’t that. These served with GIs from issue until they were warehoused.

These pistols have been in the care, custody, and control of the US military since they were made. You can’t say the same about some pawnshop special that has been “made correct” by who knows how many owners.

These guns are the actual real deal.

Also, don’t be put off by the “I ain’t jumpin’ through no hoops” crowd. Its not that hard. These CMP threads always bring out the negative brain waves for some reason.

Don’t want one? Don’t buy one. They will all sell without you.

It is not that much more cost and 'They' don't have a choice. It is due to federal orders.




I got my one and am quite satisfied with it. The pistol went through rebuild post WWII and MIGHT have been in Korea and Vietnam. Since there are no records available for that time period we will never know for sure. There is a good chance it went to Desert Storm as the Puerto Rico National Guard Unit it was assigned to was there and used as prisoner guards and traffic cops. After that it was sent to the Anniston Army Depot, gone over and stored until it was sent to the CMP and later to me.

The U.S. hasn't purchased any new 1911s since the end of WW II. Almost all the guns in inventory have been rebuilt at least once and some several times. They aren't perfect, but they are serviceable. Each gun has been inspected and repaired as needed to meet military specs. These guns were in storage to be issued to U.S. troops if needed. This is the real thing. A U.S. military issue pistol.

At those prices I will pass. When they first started selling 1911s I thought about buying one until I saw that they refused to ship to C&R holders even thought it was fully legal to do so. I'll let others have the privilege of buying one of their overpriced relics and jump through hoops to do so.

I got a really nice 1939 Colt from CMP back at the end of 2020. My brother got a 1945 Remington-Rand in 2021, and a 1937 Colt right before they paused sales in 2024. I’m waiting for my second gun, my number should come up in a couple of months. I’ll probably go with Field Grade if it’s available.

Being a history buff I FOIA’d my gun and my brothers guns. The 1937 and 1939 Colts came from the Navy. The Remington also came from the Navy, and also spent time with the Coast Guard. I’d really like my next one to have spent time with Marine Corps, but I’ll be happy with whatever shows up.

I got one in Round 4 that is the twin to yours. It looks to be about in the same condition too. I took mine out and found that for an old wartime piece it shot pretty well. Mine went to the California National Guard and was with them for 23 years before being transferred to Anniston, AL for good before being sent to me. Take yours out and play with it.
