Got a set of those aluminum barrel vise jaws and they marked up my barrel. Before I do it again, I was thinking of spraying a protective coating of some sort on them.

Has anyone done this and do you have a recommendation for the spray or paint on material? Hoping to come up with something I can pick up at Lowes or HD.

You could pick up a can of Black Plasti-Dip at Lowes and dip the jaws in them a few times, that will build up a rubber coating. Not sure how well it will hold up, the stuff is fairly tough.

I am assuming these are not a precise fit around the barrel, more like "V" grooves, or "semi-circle shaped" grooves? You could cover the clamp points on either the vise or the barrel with wide masking tape so you have a thin, continuous layer of protection.

Leather or rubber from the hardware store will work. If you want permanent, Plastidip is the way to go.

I use a couple of cleaning patches around the barrel (cheapest) with no issues of marring.

Hate to admit I'd never heard of friction tape. It will not scratch the barrel?

same stuff they use on tennis rackets. I use it for tools all the time. It's basically a adhesive cloth wrap. comes in spools like electrical tape. Wrap it up a few layers and you'll be good.

Medical cloth or foam tape works great. Any adhesive residue can easily be cleaned with Naphtha (Commonly known as Lighter fluid).

Aim small,

I just use a sheet of white copier paper wrapped around the barrel. Works fine. The biggest thing, as already noted, is to make SURE that the jaws aren't nicked/marred. I always check mine with my finger/fingernail before I use them.

Easiest way I've found is cut a 4 inch section of bicycle innertube and slip over your barrel, then place your clamps on. Keeps the barrel from spinning or getting marked up.

how about an bicycle inner tube? They come in ~21cm diameter which would be perfect.

If you have a large enough vise, your barrel won't spin.
Make sure there is no oil on the jaws or the barrel.
Double check the jaws for any nicks, maybe sand lengthwise with some 60 or 100 grit sand paper and clean any grit off the jaws.
Some paper is a neat idea, but you still need a vise with at least 5" jaws to get enough squeeze.
