Cobras!

Living on the California coast near S.F., we used to watch them traversing the coast quite often.

Nothing sounds quite like a flight of Cobras.

They've stopped taking this route and I miss them.

They're not black, but did you have your aluminum cap on when they flew over?

could have been at nellis to arm to go to the bombing and gunnery ranges. they are just northeast of nellis beyond the mountains and out in the desert.

Nope. Been replaced by the UH-60M Blackhawk.

There are very few 1D's left in the world actually, after Nam most were scrapped or destroyed in Movies. Very few left that can even fly.

ive been flown in a couple when fighting fire in the forest service that was a few years ago(decades) i think it could take 6-8 guys and all their gear. just a flying work truck:D. the smaller choppers were used for bird dogging and paper trails etc.
you could hear your ride coming for a couple minutes before you saw them . pretty exciting for a farm kid probably would have worked all day just for the helocopter ride:cool:

My Father used to repair the Hueys and Cobras when they came in from Nam. It was the biggest thrill for me to get to :ride" in both when I was a yonker. My Dad was at the controls and only needed to go up and down a bit-but as a 5 year old--it was like winning the lottery and or meeting John Wayne :D

And I thought that I was a fossil. The Army had H models in the late 60's!

I am a fossil--but I must have given the wrong designation? I also remember seeing many Chinooks flying near Garland, Tx-when we would go there for vacation to visit some relations.

The USMC still has many Cobras. it's still their workhorse combat helicopter as they don't have Apaches. we have a retired USMC three star rotor head living near here and I have talked to him quite a bit about helicopters. I loved watching the "old snakes" work in the RVN. got to fly once in the front seat. quite a thrill for a 19 year old kid fresh off the farm. lee
