I have an absurd number of spare coffee filters. Can they be cut up into cleaning patches for barrels and cylinder chambers? Thanks in advance!

Why not? Similar to Hoppes non woven patches. If they're too thin, double them. I'd check to assure they don't abrade bluing first, say under the grip.

Coffee filters, at least the ones I use, are paper. I can't see them hurting anything, but I'm not sure if they would be any better or economical than patches purchased in bulk.

Might be worth trying. Run a regular patch down the barrel after your done, and see if come out clean.

I've used coffee filters as lint-free wipes for camera lenses.

Cleaning patches need to be absorbent. I use old underwear/socks/flannel shirts in addition to cotton patches from the store.

In my experience, what gets scratched on eyeglasses is the coating on glass lenses and plastic lenses are more easily scratched. Firearms are made of harder materials. RGVshooter makes a great point about old flannel and underwear being great materials for gun cleaning patches and rags.
