Colt Combat Commander Beavertail question UPDATE pics added

Hi could someone please tell me if the Combat Commander Beavertail grip safety is the same as the Commander, Government, and Officers?

I'm looking on Brownells at the Wilson Combat drop-in Beavertail grip safety. It says must be used with Commander style or bobbed hammers only. When I search for Combat Commander, they only show grip safety's that fit model Commander, Government, and Officers.

If the Combat Commander is different from the others, could someone please point me to a different website that would sell a drop-in for my Combat Commander. Sorry for my ignorance on the subject and thanks in advance for all helpful replies.

I ordered a stainless steel drop-in Beavertail Grip Safety from Wilson Combat. I was nervous that the stainless would clash with the satin Nickel, but I think it looks great. And it fits my hand so much better. Can't wait to take it to the range if I can catch a break from work.

Commander and combat commander frames should have the same dimensions. It’s just a difference in what they were made of.

The grip safety is the same, but if you don't have a Commander-style hammer, or a bobbed hammer, it won't fit. The regular Government model spur hammer will hit the extended tang and keep the gun from functioning properly.

As long as your Combat Commander has the round hammer, you should be fine.

Edit: Actually, make sure it's for Commander. I believe the Government Model has a different frame tang; it's longer than on the Commander.

Ok, yeah, that should work. The Enhanced Government Models had the same tang configuration as the Commander, IIRC. It's the regular Government Model that had the longer tang.

I think you're good to go.

I've never cared for drop-in beavertails. When I take a firing grip on the gun, that beavertail portion of the safety presses down on the top of my hand making the grip uncomfortable YMMV.

The gun is uncomfortable for me to shoot so much that I want to sell it or trade it off and the discomfort is right at the top of the safety grip. I like the look of the gun and it's collectability, so I want to try this Beavertail in hopes that I can enjoy shooting it. I dont own any guns that I don't enjoy shooting, so if it still doesn't fit me after the drop in Beavertail, I'll be getting rid of it. My Kimber Custom II has a Beavertail and it is very comfortable to shoot.

I tried a drop-in beavertail safety once and it was from Wilson Combat, so not some cheap part. I did not like all the gaps between the beavertail and the frame tang. I pitched it and went for a fully fitted beavertail, which I found quite comfortable.

I have a Combat Commander, I've always hated the short tang grip safety but did not want to modify the frame. I found a Government Model "Enhanced" grip safety at Brownells. This has a longer tang that is shaped for a Commander style hammer. It dropped into my pistol without mods and is much more comfortable to shoot.

Brownells part number is 160-112-110 for blued, -111 for S/S. Unfortunately both are currently listed as on backorder. If you can locate one of these I believe that will solve your dilemma.

I agree, a Colt deserves a fitted bevertail, just as the Kimber does.

I DO have a drop-in on my RIA 1911 that is just a spare that I got when they first came out. The Colts and my carry 1911s all have fitted beaver-tails.

The drop-in, like any 'one size fits none' is a lot like the adjustable ball caps vs a sized one. It works after a fashon, but nothing like a fitted cap.

OP, you'll see what I mean when you do a side by side with the Kimber's fitted beavertail.

I have installed several beavertail grip safety's, on Gold Cup, Springfield 5" 1911, RIA compact 1911, and a couple others. They all use the same one, but many frames must be cut for it to fit. Eddie Brown sells a "jig" to guide you to grind/file/stone the grip frame to fit the safety. It isn't difficult, just tedious go slow so you don't take too much off the frame.
