I don't know much about Colts. But I know what I like.
And if it is 45 caliber and has a cylinder I like it a lot.

I was at a local shop picking up some cash$ from a job I did for them.
This was in the case and I asked to see it.
Once it was in my hands I did not set it down until the paperwork was done.
They ended up getting my salary and then some.

Is this a commercial bright finish New Service. Post WW1 ?? Edited to add; No it is not.
It is an old re-finish done well on a gun that had little or no pitting on it to start.

Oh well, the dreams of finding an original gun from 90 years ago are just dreams it seems.

Serial number is 2969oo , I believe this dates it to 1920.

A strange little proof mark , S15 , no other marks but on the barrel.

The eagle's head was the military acceptance stamp and the S15 was a military inspector's stamp. Is the barrel marked UNITED STATES PROPERTY under it?

There should be a military service number and U.S. ARMY MODEL 1917 on the butt and a serial number on the frame and yoke.

Do the cylinder bores have shoulders in them?

It's in great shape though. Original do you think?

What is the marking on the butt?? The S15 is a military proof.

If the gun tracks to 1920, Colt may have been using up frames made for the Model 1917 for commercial guns.

I had a 1917 and a commercial New Service .45 Colt made in the mid-'30's. The latter was exceptionally accurate, and the sights were dead on.

Very nice. Look out though, it looks like Ed don't want to turn it loose.

Congratulations on a terrific looking piece.

Sweet wheel gun in Gods' own caliber..................Ya done good....,again!!!!

Just an update. Regarding questions about markings.

There are no marks on the gripframe or under the barrel.
This is definitely a commercial model with just an inspectors proof
on the frame up there.

Yes I will be shooting it at Markham park in 2 weeks.

Thanks

Allen:
After our phone discussion and seeing your posted pictures, I found this link to another owner who has a 1920's vintage New Service, with the same S15 inspector's mark. Interesting that his was (later) parkerized and still has the US Army marks on the butt.

Colt Model 1917 Army New Service Model 45 ACP Double Action Revolver - Profile of Colt Model 1917 Army New Service Model 45 ACP Double Action Revolver

Another comment I found, indicated..."Also on the trigger guard there should be a mark looking like the letter "P" in a triangle. This is Colt's commercial proof mark."

I hope this info helps.

Rgds,
Fred
