Colt declares bankruptcy

Sad, but no real surprise.

Good for S&W, Kimber and SIG.
Not unexpected for sure... :( ... but I seriously doubt the other handgun manufacturers are doing the "Dance of Joy" tonight. :o

Colt hasn't been a big player in the civilian market for years. And for us long-suffering subjects of Massachusetts, there are no Colts on our approved handguns list anyway. :( So we won't see any effect at all.

They filed for reorganization, not liquidation...I can't see the Pentagon letting them fold, too much product out there to support.

I don't know about that... if the Pentagon was concerned about the well being of Colt, it has a funny way of showing it with the $77 Million M4 contact awarded to FN. That dealt a major blow to Colt Defense.

I don't know how the procurement process works and whether or not the Pentagon had any say, or if it was entirely the "bean counters" at work... but either way, the US government seems to have a hand in facilitating Colt's predicament instead of bettering it.

How long can a company make it on only high priced 1911's and AR15's. Colt really hasn't had a new product out in years. You can't shut down research and development and hope to make it in todays market.

It doesn't look like....

It doesn't appear that Colt is 'too big to fail'.

I can see your point about AR's, but their 1911's are one of the few brands that use the costly process of using forged blanks for both barrels and frames. Not many still use forged for both.
Sure, extruded blanks for gun parts will "last a lifetime" for the most part, but Colt's are the ones that will last when used and passed on down to children, grand children, great grandchildren and beyond.
Ask most any competent gunsmith and they will tell you that one of their favorite 1911's to use as a base gun for mods is the Colt, so even if Colt went away, there will never be any shortage of good people to work on them and keep them working for generations to come.

I don't see how anyone can say that Colt 1911's are "high priced" when you consider how they are made and then compare what they're sold for (generally $725 to $1100) to other brands like Wilson ($3000 easy), Les Baer and others.

I doubt if Colt will be going away anytime soon, but they are going to have to make some changes.
Besides, if Colt were to ACTUALLY close it's doors and cease all production, then any Colt will immediately double in value so I guess then a person could make the claim that they are "expensive". :)

Yeah, I wouldn't count on the Pentagon to step in to save Colt. :o Anything is possible, of course. But I'd be shocked if that happened unless Connecticut's loony moonbat U.S. senators & congressmen are a lot more influential than I think. :p

Oh, boy...another Colt bankruptcy thread.

Here's what reorganization will allow...
Colt to break all contracts with anyone it deems as not productive.
Colt to get out of CT without much headache, as pretty much all other gun MFR's already have.
Colt gets to break all Union ties as soon as it occurs,
and re-organize elsewhere without Union interference...as Remington and other have done...
Can we say Marlin in Kentucky, Remington & Steyr in Alabama?? I knew we could ;)
In fact, watch for pretty much ALL Major Gun Mfr's to move out of the North within the next ten years...
as they are high in taxes and very gun-unfriendly...not to mention the Union mess...

Watch for Colt to head to a Southern State ASAP...Alabama and Florida are particularly gun-friendly,
and exceptionally low on taxation of Biz...not to mention Florida has Bikini Babes's 11 months of the year ;)
Florida also has no State Income Taxes on Individuals, meaning the only thing you gotta pay is purchase taxes.
Santa Rosa county is 6%, Escambia 7&1/2%

I hope to God that Colt does a lot better job in their reorganization and move, than what Remington did with moving Marlin's manufacturing... those "Remlins" were atrocious, and only in recent months has quality started to become close to the pre-Remington days.

Right now over a dozen different company's make 1911's and AR15's. Several make 1973 revolvers. When the newest product that you sell was designed in 1959, and the others were designed in 1873 and 1911, you're going to have problems.

As far as quality 1911's go, I think S&W makes several with the same or better quality, reliability and more features, for a much better price point. In my area I'm seeing colt rail guns selling for the same price as the S&W e-series TA. I think the e series TA is a way better product and it has a hell of a lot more features for the price point.

looks like I bought my new Government model just in time. Sad to hear that they went under. I loved the 1911 I had in the Army as well as the M16.
peace
