I'd like to know if this Colt Officer Model 38 revolver, Serial #585xxx, mfg. 1950 is a third or fourth issue.
New to Colt's and wonder if the third issue has more value, as I see the fourth issue was made from 1949-1952.
It has a tapered barrel, and I think the fourth issues had the bull barrels.

Bluing is 95-98% and it has ivory grips.
I'd like approx. idea of value.

Florida Guy, I checked proofhouse site could not find good information about the model and serial number. Does your Colt have adjustable sites like this?

This is a second model.

The Officers Models have confusing serial number ranges. What is the rollmark on the side of the barrel? 1st model, 2nd model etc, are names given to the Colt Officers models by collectors. The rollmark on the barrel will be what Colt called it.

The Officers Model Target .38 was numbered in the Official Police serial number range. One with a serial number of 585XXX would date from 1933. If it has sights like on the one posted by gunfish, (which looks like a pre-1923 variation from the style of stocks) plus checkered hammer spur, trigger face and cylinder release and a tapered barrel, it would be correct. The Heavy Barrel was an option starting in 1935.

Florida Guy, we'd love to see photos. The Colt Officers Model target revolvers are fine pieces of machinery.

I agree with Walter Rego that the serial number you report would be found on a prewar OM. A pic or two would help us nail down exactly what you have.
