In the process of cleaning out my dad's home, I have come across about 200 or 300 comic books they range in age from the late 60's to the late 80's. I know nothing about Comic books, but hate to just give them away. I also know we have a diverse group of folks out there. Anyone have any insight or thoughts on where to start on figuring out what I have?

I understand I will not be turning them into a year of college for my son, but I would be happy if all of them could be turned into a new rifle....

Thanks in advance for any help out there.

With that many you are almost certain to have some valuable ones. I would find a reputable dealer and try to get an estimate on what they would purchase and for what price. That should at the very least tell you what catches an experts eye. Then do serious research. You sure don't want to see what you sold for a dollar being appraised on Antique Road Show for a thousand. Know what I mean?

Get on ebay and search for comics that you have to see what they are selling for. They really need to be in like new condition unless they are very rare. Anything with a number 1 would be worth researching.

Don't underestimate their value. Seek someone out or do some online research. You may have more than you think (maybe 2 rifles)!

Go to a comic book store, get a comic book guide. A lot of the Marvel stuff came out in the 60s and even some valuable ones in the 80s.

I was a big Marvel fan growing up and bought a lot of comic books in the early to mid 90s. I probably have a guide laying around somewhere but it won't do any good since its probably circa 1996.

Whatever you do dont let the store or anyone else talk you into buying the entire collection before you find out the actual values

Great advice from everyone. You may have a small fortune there depending on rarity and condition. E-bay prices are a easy reference to start at.

I was a big Marvel fan from 1967-1969 and still have mine. Mine are mostly super hero and I bought everything drawn by Jack Kirby I could find. As mentioned condition is everything. I recently took these pictures for the Colt Forum.

Comic books are big business, and can draw serious $. Find a good comic collector price guide, then start researching and inventorying what you have.

DO NOT simply give them away. You may have nothing, you may have a bit more.

Also dont just go by series #. Sometimes #100 can be worth more then #1 because it introduces a new popular character or the story takes an unexpected turn that changes the entire story line afterwards.

Just buy a price guide and take a weekend to sort it out.

I used to collect-send me a PM and I can give you the jist of it all. Also--do NOT--put total trust in Comic Book shops-remember THEY are in it to make huge profits.

Hey, whats the very first issue of guns & ammo worth? I have a copy in my garage. I even have a note book with old newspaper articles some old gr, gr grandma or whatever passed down pasted clippings in it about president lincoln getting assasinated.

If this is for me? ive no clue on non comic books ;-))

The Lincoln clippings (IF) original? are a different matter. Collectors might pay good money for that stuff? However, just remember that just because its old, does not mean its worth anything.

Ive got several original Harper's Weekly Newspapers in my humble collection--all from between 1981-to-1880--all in as mint as condition as possible--and none are worth more than about $35 per.

I have a black and white signed photograph of presdent nixon to a secret service agent. Its about 8" x 10"s and has a offical whitehouse stamped number on the back. Much value?

Take the above advice. Get them checked by a reputable dealer then consider options. Also get a second opinion. Depending where you are located, you may be able to get some serious buyers to travel to you.

I just sold my collection from when I was a kid and got $19,000. So do take this seriously. Just remember the value depends on what issues and condition.

ps. I had to treat myself so I finally picked up a 629-1 3" with a little of the cash. The rest was planned for.

I was corrected last year by a 'collector'. They are no longer 'comic books'... they are now considered 'graphic novels'! A good price guide will be money well spent. Poly envelopes help preserve them from further 'deterioration', too.

My nephew is a firefighter, his side job is selling comic books on eBay. Made about $40,000 last year doing that. Not to shabby.

Always get a second and sometimes a third or fourth opinion. Case-in-point: When I was much younger-I saw an ad in a newspaper (from Florida) where some guy was selling his entire Comic book store wares. He had a copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 (the 1st app of Spiderman) for $150.00 and was listed as Fine/V.F condition-and then that was still-a steal. I wasnt working much then and had little cash to spare-so I called him up and made an excellent deal for that issue. We swapped books and exchanged soem cash. When I got the book in, it was better than mentioned.

Well, I took it to a friend who collected and had tens of thousands fo comic books dating back to some of the earliest from Detective Comics (Batman) Batman, Action Comics (Superman) Superman, Captain America and such--so I figured I would see what he would offer for this book since he didnt have a copy.

Well, he asked what I traded for it as well as cash spent and I told him what was what. He then asked what I expected for the book and I told him $900.00-which was a hefty profit margin as with all the books I traded for it--I paid cover price and that amount added to maybe about $50.00 and I had extra copies of what I traded-so it didnt matter to me. He scoffed and said for the condition-that was way too high. I said something like: Whatever, it was the price I was asking for it (and I now regret selling it off) but--hell-an almost $700.00 profit was good enough for em. I place an ad in the paper for $900-was contacted by people all over the Country-but another called me as nobody made commitments and he offered $1,00-would also have the check in my hands the next day-and would pay for shipping and insurance. I said it was a deal. Anyway, long story shorter--he sold it in less than a week for $5,000, last I heard that book sold for about 6 months later-was a cool $50,000. Grant it that this was back in 1988.

Part 2 of the above.

I had gone to a few local comic shops and some out of town, and got told all kinds of woeful stories. Not one of them was willing to give me anything near what they knew the book to be valued at-in trade or cash, and I wasnt willing to get robbed on selling it either. I was patient and sold when the time came--which was actually less than a month after I did the original trade.

When I was out of town attending a university-my home was broke into-and the entire collection was stolen. I never recovered any of those books and suspected who took them. I started collecting again and soon had about 10 boxes full of books-those too were stolen from my parents home when i was attending another university to get into Law Enforcement. I never was able to recover those-but I knew who took them because that person took only books that were not War comics like Sgt Rock/Fury etc. I will never collect them again-but such is life.

Had I gone with only one or two opinions? I would not have made a cool $800.00 profit on a less than $200 dollar investment.

I was an avid reader of comic books as a kid. This would be starting in the early 60s when Marvel was just beginning to make a name for themselves. I had stacks and stacks of them. Many number 1s and lots of early ones where classic villians were introduced for the first time. Today they'd be worth a fortune!
But while I was in the Army, my Dad cleaned out my room and threw them away.
