I'm looking into Smith & Wesson automatics but don't see much about what I'm genuinely interested in.

I'm looking for photos of pistols that are using a compact frame (69xx series) and a longer slide (59xx series, 915, others?). If you have any of these style pistols please post a photo.

More importantly, if I were to pick up one of the many 6906s for sale, where could I hope to pick up a standard slide to put on it? I haven't seen many for sale, and when I do see them they cost nearly the same as new pistol.

The real goal here, is to assembly a 6906 frame/long slide with a single side safety, and Heine straight 8 sights.

I'm could achieve this cheaper then purchasing an M&P 9c (although that ma not be possible).

If the gun is actually assembled eventually I'd like to have it done in black over gray with black controls. But that is a way down the line thought.

So
-Please post photos of compact frame/long slide combos.
-Where should I look for slide assemblies?
-Any other slides that will work for this?

Thanks.
-Cory

Well first off, I have to say I am not an expert at all. Hopefully
someone who is can comment better.
I have switched my 4516 top end onto my 4506 lower, and 4506
top end onto my 4516 lower. I liked both, and they ran great. If
the 4516 was a 457, I don't think I would have done it. I don't
know for sure, but my gut feeling is it would be bad for the alloy
frame. There are allot of compact uppers out there, ( I bought
three complete, cheep, in the last two years), what happened to
the alloy lowers? Seems like the extra mass of a full length upper
would be VERY BAD for a compact, (alloy), frame. Even 9mm.
I went the other way and have "dedicated" complete compact
uppers for both my 3906 and 5906. Not really sure why though.

With a 45 or 40, I would also hesitate to make the switch on an alloy frame, but I'd do it with a 9mm. In fact, I have, and it's been shooting fine ever since. :D

Mine's a 908 lower with a 4" 910 upper on it. I've also added a pic of someone else's 6906 with a 5" slide on it, which would be pretty awesome.

Adding a new slide can easily throw off your decock timing, which means a new or adjusted sear release lever. I had luck with mine by buying a parts kit with slide, barrel, and sear release lever, which I swapped in and kept it in timing.

I found my slide&parts kit on gunbroker, but you can also find them on the big online auction site. Numrich has some as well, but not at any bargain prices.
