There's a baker's dozen choices of good self defense ammo.
I use 200gr Gold Dots.

Most people match the bullet weights of their practice and carry ammo.

I've seen great reviews on them, will have to try it out. I guess it all depends on personal preference and i still need plenty of experience.
Thanks

I have 11 45acp handguns, but no M&P's. I use Fed. 230gr. Hydrashocks in all but 1, I use Silvertip 185 gr in it. This is so the ammo shoots to the sights. I expeirmented with about 15 types of PD ammo in 4 Handguns, and fount this consistancy and stuck with a good ammo that works in so many guns. The local Big CITY P.D. went to S&W 4506 several years ago and used the Fed. 230's, their rangemaster (my fil) retired and the newrange master went to SPEER, 3 of us tried the new loads and couldn't get that batch of ammo to group less than a foot at 25yds out of around20 45 autos, needless to say that is not an ammo I would carry. The Big City P.D. has gone to S&W M&P's now but I don't know which ammo they use. Ivan

Lots of good choices as mentioned. I'm in the process of testing most available defensive loads, and it's going to take awhile! But here are some of the favorites in 45 caliber.........

And the ever-popular (with good reason) Gold Dots!

As much as I like the Gold Dots they can be hard to find. In warmer weather with fewer clothing layers to penetrate I like the Critical Defense, in colder climes I think the W-W PDX stuff is really good.

You pays your money and takes your chances. ;)

Federal 230gr.standard pressure HST.

Round on left from a S&W 1911 108285.Round on right from a 4 inch Kimber Pro carry.

Penetration 12 1/2 inch and 12 5/8 inch respectively.

For the most part any of the current SD ammo produced by a name brand manufacturer will do what it's supposed to do. IMO reliability and accuracy are now more important than the bullet and I suggest you find the ammo that will feed flawlessly and is accurate in YOUR pistol. The best bullet in the world means nothing unless you hit what you aim at.
