I finally acquired a Model 58. The bluing is pretty decent overall with some missing on the high-points and sides of the muzzle. However the bluing on the back-strap of the grip is horrible and detracts from the overall appearance. I will be looking for a set of closed-back stocks for the revolver, but still would like to have this bluing issue addressed.

I searched the Forum and saw some of the responses to bluing done at the factory as well as by high-end companies. My revolver will be a shooter and not a safe queen. That being said, I want it to be aesthetically appealing and need to have it re-blued.

I'm leaning towards having S & W do this for me. Those of you that had the factory do the work, have you been satisfied? Does it hold up to shooting/cleaning with solvents?

All observations/comments are welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

Factory Blue???

This past year I sent S&W a 29-2 to be reblued. It came back with a "cloudy" side plate. When I called, they ask that I send it back. When I received it again the side plate was still "cloudy" & I couldn't tell that they made any change at all. I called again & was told that they used their new bluing process & nothing else could be done about it!!! BE AWARE that S&W will use this same process on your M58 if you send it in to the factory to be refinished!!! If I had it to do over , I think I would send it to one of the reputable finishers rather than S&W.

Sorry to say, I wouldn't have S&W do my bluing these days. Their new process -- specific changes unknown -- per S&W doesn't stand up to traditional ammoniated cleaning solvents like Hoppes #9.

I'd opt for one of the several high quality bluing shops out there for a tradition job.

I'd go with Fords.

Smith does a good job, I had one done there, but the "blue" you get back is not the same blue you currently have on your gun.
