I'm considering purchasing this used 686-3. The adjustable front sight and blade is what concerns me - have never seen a setup like that. I am not a S&W expert by any stretch of the imagination, but I am guessing this is not "stock" and the barrel had to be "cut" in order to make that "slot" for this front sight setup. If that is correct, then this is only as good as the gunsmith that did the work. Am I correct in saying all that?

Also, does that slot weaken the barrel at all?

Finally, what would you pay for the gun? I buy to use, not collect.

Thanks for the help!

it's legit. the target champion model and they are not all that common anymore. i would snag it for the right price.

Smith made a few variants of the 686 with the adjustable front sight. These are not rare, but they are not common either. The book says they are worth a premium. What I would pay would depend if it comes in the box with all the goodies. I would pay $500 without and up to $700 with box and good condition. I do not think the barrel is weakened at all.

It's legit.

4 position front sight.

Here's the same thing in a 29-3 called the Classic Hunter. I had it hard chromed and a green insert placed in the front sight.

Wow, nice looking 29! Did you also have it magnaported?

Thanks to all for the info so far. Since this appears to be a target pistol, I'm guessing it has had its fair share of rounds put down the barrel. Should I be concerned about how much life is remaining in the gun?

Also, any more thoughts on value/price would be appreciated. Thanks!

The 686 is built like a tank. with a modicum of care, it will outlast you and several subsequent owners......

I can get this for $575. Tack on shipping and my FFL fee and I'm at about $625. No box. Is that a good deal or not?

It looks to be in excellent condition with a nice looking set of grips. If I had the money, I would probably buy it. I wouldn't say it's a steal, but a good price.

It depends upon how important an older gun is to you. I paid $600 for a new 686 six months ago. I think the price is too high, but I typically feel used prices are not discounted enough.

I also have no need or desire for a hideous front sight that provides no added benefit to me. If an adjustable front sight is of interest for you fine, if not I'd continue looking for something else.

Many S&W enthusiasts (including myself) will pay a premium for an older gun WITHOUT that abhorrent lock. This 686 appears to be in excellent condition, and is a variant that is seldom seen. IMHO, the cost to you is reasonable. The older 686-3s are much nicer than the new 686s with the MIM parts and the lock. I find the ugly hole in the side of a revolver to be more "hideous" than the very functional and purpose built adjustable front sight on this fine revolver. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it if I liked it.......

I bit on it. Will let you know how it looks when it gets here next week. Thanks for the info!!!

Looks good, guys! More importantly, fires good! Took it to range on Sunday and had a ball with it. Sighted it in for 5, 7, 10 and 15 yards. This is going to be a fun gun to own!
