S&W will not convert a 3rd Gen to a DAO. They will convert a Value Line or CS Series to DAO, since the mechanism changed.

The 3rd Gen DAO requires a different frame and slide, since the hammer is cocked half way by the action of the slide.

On the Value Line and CS Series autos, they utilized the same DA/SA frame and slide, and made it so the slid is cocked only a quarter of the way by the action of the slide.

If you want a DAO, trade your DA/SA for a DAO version of the same pistol.

What Gen 3 are you interested in converting.

Thanks for the reply's.

I was looking at buying a 908. Looks like I will be able to convert it. I always thought the 908/457 were part of the 3rd. generation.

Converting a 908 might be cheaper than buying a 3954.

Yes, a 908, since it's a Value Line (plastic parts, loose tolerance, etc) it can be converted by S&W. But, go into it knowing what you are getting. It's NOT going to have the decent trigger pull of a Gen 3, like a 3953/3954 like you mentioned. It will be a longer trigger pull since the slide movement cocks the hammer only a quarter of the way instead of half way like a Gen 3.
