While the 1967 Paul Newman film was set in Florida, it was actually filmed forty minutes south of me here in California. Lodi and Stockton specifically. Here’s an excellent video by a local guy visiting these areas with movie trivia thrown in and real good contrasting the past with the present. It’s part 1 of 2.

That's very cool to see, some of the buildings and bridges are still there.

Saw the movie when it was originally released (I was in high school). I did not realize it was set in Florida. I always thought it was set in Louisiana, or just a generic southern state. The scenes inside the camps reminded me of some of the old camps at Parchman (the Mississippi State Prison), which was close to where I grew up. Those old barracks-style camps on the prison farm are long gone, partly due to a lawsuit in federal court. The have been replaced by more modern buildings with cell blocks.

One of my favorites...got caught one day while channel surfing, ended up watching the rest of the show, came in right where he's just moving into the quarters. Although filmed in California, they sure put the vibe out there for the South.

"I can be a good guy, or I can be a real ***. It's all up to you"

Good words for anybody to live by.

So I have spent all these years driving back roads in Florida looking for a babe washing a car, and all that time she was in California?

George Kennedy called her "Lucille". Paul Newman said "she knew exactly what she was doing". I don't think there was any "failure to communicate" in that scene!
