Coondog pretty much has run of the house even when we're gone. But sometimes she's put in jail if we're eating dinner while sitting on the couch and a few other times when its appropriate. Coondog hates jail.

But... she hates getting her nails trimmed even more than jail. The second she sees the dremel in my hand she runs for cover and puts herself all the way to the rear...

A Dremel is a pretty much standard way to trim a dogs nails. Better then clipping which leaves the nails kind of rough. The Dremel leaves the nails smoother and less likely to snag carpets etc.

Our dog doesn't like any grooming but does eventually just stand still and takes it. I think it's the reward she'll get when it's over that does it. When she's done she immediately goes over to where her treats are kept and sits there until she gets her treat.

There are C battery powered "dremel" like tools on the market made specifically for trimming nails. They don't have any power, but work by high rpm. A person could easily stall the tool out simply by grabbing the sanding drum. They are quite effective and I use them often to trim my own toe claws.

I'm just trying to bring an alternative.

Laud noises
Rustling leaves
Some random people
Random dogs
Teeth cleaning
Vacuum cleaner
Anything unusual

His safe space is anywhere you're at. If he heard something laud and I'm in the kitchen he'll run over and hide behind me!
The only time he avoids me is when I have the vacuum cleaner out. Then he runs upstairs shaking and peaks down to see when I'm done!!

If we're outside for a walk and he heard a loud noise he'll immediately turn around and start pulling back home!

We're pretty much afraid of everything except for treats!!!

Maybe tilt the crate open side up and work from there?

Little off topic but my neighbor used to borrow a dremel to trim the spurs on his fighting roosters back before it was outlawed in Okla. The fighting, not the trimming.

She will hunt hard all day, cheerfully stay out in the snow, sleet, hail, swim in a pond before all the ice is out, never whimpers when she gets her shots, but try to clip her nails and it's the end of the world. At the vet's for her annual checkup the vet and three of us thought we had her under control when she launched off the table and almost knocked one of the assistants down.
I said "Told you she's a springer!" Got a good chuckle.

I drimeled my dogs nails today. No big deal. She worked through it like a well bred bird dog should. Breeders call that biddable. Most working and sporting breeds are bred to do what you want them to. Just give them the mission briefing.

I used to hunt a springer. I can relate. With mine it was her ears and eyes. We would run all of our dogs thru the ear and eye clean out after a days hunt. I had pretty big guy (6'1"/200 lbs) trying to hold my dog and he couldn't do it. That guy was as strong as an ox and my dog managed to bust out.

If I hadn't seen it I would have never believed it.

My nail trimmer is just hand operated and makes no noise but they see the trimmer and they are gone. I have never even nipped either of them. The little one will yank her paws so hard that I can't begin to cut her nails. She is 20 lbs. of muscle. She acts like such a mean scary dog but she will not even let anyone but me get within 10 feet of her.

I had a 90 lb. German Sheperd that three 200 lb. men tried holding down for a woman to spray his ears for mites. When she came close to with the spray the dog just stood up with all three of us on top of him. The one guy said the heck with this when the dog just stood up.

Lucy was very food motivated. The cable accessory allowed a bit of space between the motor and us.

Dingo goes to the groomer for his trims. Way less hassle. 3 different groomers have told me he's no problem.

The big thing with the Dremel is to not burn the nail. Few seconds at a time per nail. Cheeseclothe can help keep fur out of the drum.

My old collie boy is deathly afraid of bare floors. He will hesitate and then test a piece of floor, draw his paw back and wait, until finally he screws up enough courage to dart across it. I just put a runner down and that took him half an hour just to get used to the change and try it. He likes it now...
I love my scaredy old boy...

What I did was to get the dog used to the sound of the Dremel - she never minds me messing with her feet and I used to clip the nails. When I decided that the Dremel would result in smoother nails at the end of the process, I started to run the machine in the next room until the sound no longer bothered her. Then, I would bring it into the same room with her and run it at low speed. Then run it at higher speed. Then got it pretty close to her running at the lowest speed. When she no longer paid any attention to the Dremel while it was running near her, I then began to trim one foot at a time. After a few sessions doing that, I could trim all of her toes at one sitting and she was bored because she had to sit still for the operation, but there was no fight.

Worked for me, but it did require some patience.
