I bought a bunch of .357 magnum ammo while set up at the gun show this passed weekend (cheap). It was a big variety of brands, weights and bullet types. Among the boxes was some Cor-Bon 200 grain hard cast. The box says 1200 ft/sec and 640 ft/lbs. That's a big hot load! Has anyone fired that stuff from a 4" N frame Smith, or L frame? I think I'll keep it away from my K frames. I think it's designed for deer hunting, but what do you think about using it for SD?

Recoil turned out to feel much more tame than I expected out of a 27-2, 4". It shot about 3" higher than the jacketed ammo I was shooting. It seems like it would make a good SD round, except for possible over-penetration. My knowledge on hard cast bullets is limited.

What is the shape of the bullet itself? This load with a flat or SWC nosed bullet would be a good choice for a .357 carried in the woods with bear protection in mind, and would be OK for deer or hog hunting as well. Not my cup of tea for SD - too much penetration with likely little or no expansion....there are much better .357 loadings for that.

Would be a great SD load, in a situation where the bad guys are marching single file ;)

I'm fairly sure you are correct, that's a hunting load. As a SD load I think it would be lacking. A SWC bullet is meant to penetrate, not expand. Although, hitting anyone with a 200gr .357 Magnum would for sure ruin their day, expansion or not! LOL

Sir :Re: .357 Cor-bon, suggest conserving, as there isn't much out there. Been told it is an effective pig & bear stopper, so I carry it up here in the mtns.
Enjoy, Mack

Those sound similar to what I carry in the woods for protection against large animals. Bone crushers.

I have them for my 629 as well, in 320 grain.

Since last post I found Valley Gun in Bakersfield, Ca. & they were able to order it.
Good luck, Mack

Yes Sir;
That is a Bear load if I ever saw one.................for sure.
Should do very well against a skull or shoulder blade.

I would use the three hand grip !!

Groo here
Yes I have made and shot same.
I don't know of a load that kicks hard in a 4 in Nframe that is 357!!!!!!!!!!
