OK here is a highly technical question that has kept me awake at night.:D

Mail order, Drillspot has two grades of corn media to select from. 25 Lb bags

A 14/20 grit
Max 1400 mm
Min 600 mm

and 20/40 grit
Max 1000 mm
Min 425 mm

So which one to get or does it not matter one bit? I am thinking the finer 20/40 grit, why?, I do not know.:)

I have a large amount of the Walnut media from Harbor Freight but they do not have corn.

Will blast media work as a polisher as well? I would think the finer grade wouldn't stick in flash holes as easy but either one is pretty fine stuff for case polishing. I think. I know when my walnut or corn breaks down too much it just won't polish anymore.

Although if you scroll down there are several reivews saying it has been used as a case cleaner in tumblers... I would still add polish to it though.

After reading some more of the reviews, I would go with the one mil bag. Heck, I may even order some next payday...

I bought a big sack of it at the pet supply store. It'll last for years. I squirt a bit of car polish; the one in the orange bottle, in it, and it works great.

The 20/40 is the one to get, it is finer and won't stick in the primer holes. Like you, I have a large amount of the fine HF walnut media, but bought the large bag of the 20/40 drillsopt corn cob last month. Now use it exclusively as it does a beautiful job on my 9mm and 45ACP brass. Anybody need over 20 pounds of fine walnut media?

Maximumbob54 - forget any thoughts about using the stainless media in a dry vibrating tumbler. The corn cob has turned out to be the bees knees for me (9mm and 45acp). It cleans AND polishes better than walnut in the 4 hour batches I run. Adding a little NuFinish wax makes them look brand new. I deprime before tumbling and the 20/40 grit is fine enough that I find maybe 1 in 300 cases that have a flake of media in them, easily removed.

However you clean, put 2-3 used dryer sheets into the tumbler. It takes up most of the fine dust. Don't use new dryer sheets.

Thanks

Roger that. We do not use the dryer sheets very often so I use a blue shop paper towel sprayed with some liquid spray car wax.

I used a new dryer sheet once!. What a mess, had to soak the brass in cleaning solvent to get the goo off!

It's a bad thing I found this website. They have all kinds of stuff I can order,:D

40 lbs delivered for $27.00! can't beat that!

Econoline 526040G-40 Blast Media, 40 Lbs, Corn Cob, 20/40 Grit

I have pretty much stamped out my stainless steel media thought. I will order a big bag of corn cob instead. Now if we can find a good bulk buy on some nufinish...

I use fine walnut , and like the fact that it's too fine to stick in flash holes. Seems to clean primer pockets a bit too.

Corn will swell with humidity.

My experience with tumbler media is finer is better.

I buy my walnut media from Harbor Freight (the fine blast media). And I buy my corn cob from Drill Spot. I have searched all the local pet supply stores in my area and can not find a better price. I see others talk about great prices at pet supply stores, but not here.

I use an Lyman Autoflo and the fine walnut will empty through the flash hole while the media is draining. I don't even have to flip over the brass to get it to empty.

Rule,
Are you sure you aren't just being OCD? :)

I don't like the finer stuff because it turns to dust faster, or has more dust with it already(walnut).

Now, I use the Lyman stuff. I mix it half and half with treated corncob and treated walnut shells. Works great.

Thanks a lot guys. Now I have 40 pounds of corn cob media on the way from Drilspot.

I'll let you know how it works for me.

Lizard Litter from the Pet Store, and a coupla squirts of car polish....
as said above, it works just fine.....and CHEAP

But this stuff is even cheaper, therefore better than the pet store. I have used that also (walnut) and it is good. The corn cob bedding is way to coarse.

Skip,

I really do not give a rodents rump what grade it is as long as it works.:D

Guess I will have to a complete, detailed scientific study and report on it. We can have control samples, different grades of dirty brass, time of tumbling, which polish or car wax used. Oh, so many variables.!

It's ordered so at least I will sleep tonight.;)

UPS just delivered 40 lbs of corn media today Monday. I ordered it on Friday!

It actually comes from Grainger in Jacksonville. It's in heavy brown paper bag like a sack of feed or fertilizer. Even has a MSDS sheet.

I think I am set for corn tumbler media for the next few years or more.:D

For the price and super fast delivery what's not to like?

That's great. I just figure that me, my boys, and probably my grandchildren wouldn't ever use 40 lbs of corn cob media. You can use one batch for quite a while, and the last thing I need is something else sitting around taking up space.....that's my job!

Ordered late Friday night, it arrived Tuesday. I thought you guys were exaggerating how big the bag is.

I told a shooting buddy to bring over a five gallon bucket the next time we get together.

This should last me awhile.

David
