I just had my Model 57 lettered by S&W, it's nickel with a 4" barrel and Goncalo Alves target grips leaving the factory on June 6 th 1981. The letter confirms everything except the finish, it states the gun had a blue finish when it left the factory.
After thorough examination, the gun shows no evidence of ever being refinished, all stampings are crisp, there are no stamps indicating a factory refinish, or evidence of polishing. I compared it to a friends factory nickel Model 25 and it's identical, could the factory records be wrong.

rags,

Great minds think alike! Some great minds may have a slightly faster interweb connection!

... could the factory records be wrong.
It is certainly possible that the records are wrong. People do make mistakes from time to time.

It is also possible that some expert third party refinisher did an outstanding job nickeling what had been a blued gun.

I have a 10-5 from 1969 that letters as being shipped to a city in California that doesn't exist. There is no city by that name in CA. Either the city from another entry was accidentally cited or the name was misinterpreted. The records are made and kept by humans and we are imperfect creatures.

But I agree, check for the N on the grip frame. It may indeed be refinished.

I obtained revolver directly from the factory when I was affiliated with the original REX firearms inNew York City.
It was one of three exactly alike guns in the shipment.
Was in my personal possession and on my NYC Pistol Permit for in excess of 40 years.
A factory letter was sought as it was a "Pinto" .
Factory letter claimed it was never made!
"Could not find the number".
Human error abounded then as well as now.

I got my M 36 in about 1984. It was blue, square butt.

About 5 months ago I returned it to S&W to be nickeled. None of the markings or lettering are rounded or diminished in any way. If it was to be lettered , it would say Blued. S&W did not make any marks to it, to indicate it was factory refinished.

It is a beautiful thing. Maybe yours got the factory refinish also, of which, there would be not comment or record.

All,

Whenever a squid (or old squid, in this case) states "yar", the 16 men, dead man's chest, and, especially, the bottle of rum, are all implied/understood!

Soooo .... Have you guys finally got all that out of your system? :D

The records could be in error, but the OP must keep in mind that when requesting a letter, Mr. Jinks can only report what the factory records show. Unless he has personally examined the gun and comments on what he has seen vs. what the records show, that is all you are going to get.
