Saturday, the big day...duck season opener!
The first hunt with my new dog, 13 month old American Water Spaniel Zeke.
If I do my job and kill a duck, will he do his job and retrieve it?
Did he actually earn his duck dog diploma, or did he cheat in class?
Did he spend more time at school eyeing that sassy lab with the shapely dysplasia free hips, or did he spend more time watching me the trainer?
Will he stop trying to chase the chipmunks in the wood behind him while I was throwing dekes in the water in front of him?
Will he act as goofy as he looks in this picture?
We shall see...his future getting premium chow hinges on his actions Saturday.

Have a great day out there on the marsh.

May there be many flocks of low flying ducks,
and a long season , before the ice starts to form.

Hoping for a perfect opener. The proverbial perfect storm is in the forecast...sunny and warm this week, a front from the west and a tropical storm from the east will converge Saturday, resulting in perfect duck weather...wet and cold.

Have a great day! I never missed the first day for many years. Great memories. He's a good dog.

Puddlers or divers?

Mostly puddle...mallards, teel...but it's Lake Champlain so sometimes I have to look up what drops in. Wood Ducks in the early season, but their so gorgeous that I can't bring myself to shoot them. An occasional flock of Brant will drop in as a bonus. Mergansers...I let them fly by. Cormorants taunt me by swimming through the decoys.

Over here on the Ct. River the opener was today. Much to warm, didn't even go. We don't have the big water of Champlain but see the usual wood ducks, mallards, blacks and teal and occasionally literally everything else. Was out with the dog on the river yesterday and saw two sandhill cranes. I call it pretend waterfowl hunting over here.

This weekend should be good with the weather coming in. But I agree, to warm right now...I wouldn't have gone either.
