I had noticed over the summer there were a lot of rabbits around my hunt property, deer tracks, turkey tracks, life is good. Then the rabbits started disappearing, deer seemed scarce and k9 like tracks showing up and of course lots of droppings. Then I got a coyote on camera and knew it was time to break out the predator calls.

It took me about 40 mins to call this one in. She came in the edge of the field and did a half circle around the perimeter before she started to approach the call. POA was her left side rib cage, the exit is visible. I shot as she trotted in from my right to left at about a 45 degree angle. My first kill from my new stand. Temp was still about 89 degrees about 7:15 in the evening.

Technical stuff: Spikes upper and lower, BA 18" barrel, Fiocchi 55 fmj, basic trigger with some bubba work, Nikon Monarch III.

Share your coyote pics and stories as well.

Thanks for looking.

Nice...hunting for them intentionally by calling is an accomplishment. Been some time since I did it, but it was always an enjoyable experience. My fire stick of choice is my Remington 700BDL in .222 (Made when they were still quality rifles). But the one that sticks in my memory was one I shot while turkey hunting of all things. I hunkered under some brush calling at the edge of a field, and unbeknownst to me Mr. Yote was sneaking in behind me fixated on the sound of the call. I heard a commotion behind me, spun around and the #4 copper plated shot took him mid stride as he was lunging 20' away. Happened so fast it took me a minute regain my composure. Congrats on yours, hunting them intentionally is a sport in itself.

Is FMJ legal for non-game animals in S.C.?

I haven't talked to SCDNR about it in a couple of years. I've a call into my local officer to verify. I do know for game animals fmj is illegal. I don't even think SCDNR qualifies coyotes as a non game animal, on their website they refer to them as "varmints".

As small and light at coyotes are and a small bullet traveling at roughly 2850 fps a hollow or soft point wouldn't have much of a chance to expand. I do have those rounds and will use them next time to insure a quicker kill. IMHO it wouldn't have made a difference, she only made it about 20 yards before dropping.

Coyotes have been wreaking havoc on our mule deer herds, so our state has a $50 bounty on them. Just turn in the ears (scalp) and lower mandible. They're also real troublesome during calving and lambing season.

This guy earned me fifty bucks a while back. Not enough to turn it into a cottage industry for me, but enough to keep me in shells. Took him at around 75 yards with a .22, believe it or not. Shooting CCI mini-mag hollow points.

The reason I asked is GA does not allow it. Back in June a friend’s niece popped four coyotes with an AK. One was shoulder shot, one twice through the neck/throat, one through the head, one through the lungs. All but the head shot one were still alive when my friend and niece got there.

I used FMJ back in the day, got Tired of tracking them. Went to Hornady 55g Varmint V-Max 3240 FPS.
They Usually drop right where I shoot them if they do run they don’t go far.

Shot 2 opening day of turkey season last year. One was sneaking in from behind fixated on the decoys. Load of 3” 5s ruined his day. An hour later another one approached my offside and was in the decoys before I saw her. Again, a load of #5s ruined her day! They are killers of all game and domestic animals. Shoot every one I can!

Just a follow up, DNR hasn't called me back about the FMJ and since it involves coyotes I doubt he will, they are just too busy. I used the fmj because its the most accurate I had on hand but will do some testing with SP and HP this week. I hate for anything to suffer, even a coyote.

Thanks for all your comments guys.

The sisters I wrote you about popped two this weekend on a neighbor’s 180 acres. The coyotes were busy eating a turkey when the girls drove up on the Rhino. A Mossberg 500 20 gauge and their PSA AR took care of both critters.

Chip-

What sort of binocular is that?

This one presented itself a couple of years ago. DPMS Oracle, .308/7.62, Vortex 4-16x Diamond Back, 165 grain BT Sierra Game King bullets with an appropriate load of IMR 4895 in LC Match cases. The rifle is stock with the exception of the trigger.

The rifle and load routinely produce 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards and an inch to inch and a half at 200 yards.
