One of my hunting lease partners has an electronic predator call and we decided to give it a try. It was a bright, sunny day but, very windy.
We initially set up in a field and after approximately thirty minutes, we decided to relocate to the woods. I honestly believe that the wind was blowing so hard that the sound of the call was not consistent.
The set up in the woods was near one or our most productive ladder stands, near the junction of four logging roads. We got into position and my partner turned on the call. The call has the accessory that allows you to attach a small "rabbit" or other furry looking creature on a wire that spins and moves.
We had been set up for about five minutes when I noticed movement about 60 yards away. I was hunting with my Stag M4 and using an Aimpoint Patrol Optic. The movement stopped about 15 yards from the call and about 40 yards from my position. My partner had not seen the animal and was actually closer to it that I was but, in heavy timber that happens.
My fist shot caused the animal to turn and run. I was able to follow up and connect. We both thought it was coyote but, "Bob" showed up instead. The shadows in the timber, during late afternoon, have an interesting effect on what you "see". It was a nice mature, male bobcat and I hope is absence helps our turkey hatch this Spring.
