Hi! Does any one out there have a Crimson Trace Laser on their 617 4"? I really like the concept and have held the plastic demo revolvers with the laser. Wow, talk about instant target requirement! The laser puts you right where you want to be almost instantly. The rest is up to you to make the required shot!

WELCOME TO THE FORUM, Grigier. CT LASER GRIPS ARE AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR RAPID TARGET ACQUISITION IN HUNTING OR SELF DEFENSE SITUATIONS. IF YOU ARE GOING TO USE YOUR 617 IN THE FIELD FOR SMALL GAME, THE LGs WOULD BE USEFUL. I DOUBT IF YOU WOULD BE CONTEMPLATING THE USE OF YOUR 617 PRIMARILY FOR SELF OR HOME DEFENSE--UNLESS THAT IS ALL THAT YOU OWN. IF, HOWEVER, YOU INTEND TO SHOOT BULLSEYE, YOU WOULD BE BETTER SERVED BY THE USE OF A RED DOT, THAT YOU CAN ZERO IN BY PRECISE CLICK ADJUSTMENTS FOR WINDAGE AND ELEVATION. THE LGs ARE ADJUSTABLE, BUT NOT BY PRECISE CLICKS, INTO A ZERO THAT IS ACCEPTABLE FOR HUNTING. LASER GRIPS MAY ALSO BE PROHIBITED IN SOME OF THE SHOOTING COMPETITION GENRES. MY EDC 642, WEARS A SET OF CT LG-405s. I HAVE ALSO CARRIED A 1911 WITH LASER GRIPS FOR SELF DEFENSE, WHICH WOULD EASILY GROUP A MAGAZINE FULL OF .45 ACP INTO THE X RING OF A TORSO TARGET @ 50'……….

Re: 617 Crimson Trace

Thanks! My use will not be for self defense. I will use it mostly for plinking and some small game. I will also carry it along with my Remington 700 .308 for big game hunting. Having been primarily a bow hunter for many years, I am used to the stealth and close up shooting necessary with a bow. My last deer with a rifle was forty two years ago. My shoulders gave out so I am, at age 73, going back to rifle hunting but in the back of my mind is the possibility of a close up, ten or fifteen yard shot with my 617. That is why a laser sight is so intriguing. I live in Wilsonville, OR where Crimson Trace is. It is only three and a half miles from my house!

Grigler, WE OLD DUDES RULE ! ! ! (I'M 73 YO, ALSO.) YOUR 617 W/ A CT-LG, WOULD ENABLE YOU TO PUT LETHAL HEADSHOTS ON DEER AT THE RANGES YOU DESCRIBE--ESP IF YOU SHOOT FROM A TREE STAND. CHOICE OF AMMO WOULD BE CRITICAL. I LIKE THE CCI MINI-MAG 40 GR. SOLIDS--BUT THEY MAKE A PREFRAGMENTED HP ROUND AND A COUPLE THAT MOVE FASTER--THE STINGER, AND THE VELOCITOR. AQUILA ALSO MAKES AN INTERESTING ROUND THAT CAUSES HUGE DAMAGE AND PENETRATES WELL. THE 60 GR. SNIPER SUB SONIC-THE HEAVIEST .22LR BULLET MADE. IT IS ALSO VERY QUIET. Grigler,

Perhaps you have checked into this, but many states do not allow the use of "lasers" for hunting. Red Dots are usually OK, but things that project onto the target are perhaps not. And many times these can be method specific, such as archery.

I thought I remembered something about oregon proposing to allow impaired hunters to use lasers, which made think that they were no-no's.
I just googled this quickly:

"Page 28 of the Oregon Big Game Regulations states:

No Person Shall:

Use an artificial light for hunting any wildlife, except raccoon, bobcat and opossum provided the light is not cast from or attached to a motor vehicle. This includes laser sights or any other sights which project a beam to the target. This does not include battery operated sights which only light the reticle.

Hunt any wildlife with infrared or any other night vision sight."

I am 70 years old , and while I really like the CT lasers- I have about 6 of them- , the red is useless in the day light. If they will ever get a move on and make more Green lasers I`ll get some of them. The red is only visible in the deep shade of the forrest or at twilight. If the Sun is shinning, forget about it they are invisible! So for normal light plinking your still stuck with the iron sights.
