Cruise ship shoots back at pirates

These experts that say do nothing back but allow yourself to be taken hostage and ransomed, where do they come up with this. They claim that the pirates will do worst to you if you lose the battle. Answer?- Don't lose the battle. If they get a hold of you they can do whatever they want. Rob,beat, rape, abuse and kill! Send them to H*ll whatever it takes and stop worrying about lawsuits and what pacifists advise. A portable Vulcan mini-gun in the right hands of a security force should send them to the bottom where they belong. And if a security force captures a pirate. Bring back the old days of "walking the plank".

Remember, that is the same advice the "experts" gave about airplane hijackings prior to 9/11.

On second thought, I guess the Phalanx is a bit of overkill. For cruise ships they could give some of our fine young spec ops a little R&R with them knowing that their skills may be needed. Or maybe just hire an old Texas Ranger, with a little extra "luggage".

If NONE RETURN the buddies will wonder what happened, but they won't have any information that would allow countermeasures.

Good point.

Why did they only have pistols? Have a Phalanx and take them out with that. If they some how slip past that, M14's or similar for the crew/security force. Pistols are a back-up/last resort weapon in this sort of situation.

This thinking the last 40 years of doing nothing in all parts of our lives like dont fight back at school, retreat and lock yourself in your bedroom, "you can always replace money" etc, has all led to this! Kids giveing the school bullies their lunch money to even shipping lines rather paying ransom, on every level it only encourages bullies, robbers and theives. Has hardly no one in the world been raised by a tough old man?

Yeah, a Phalanx may be a bit much. A couple of Miniguns front and rear oughta do it. Or a war surplus Quad Fifty. Those pirate vessels don't seem too hard to punch a hole through.

Each ship needs three U.S. Marines, and one U.S. Navy corpsman armed with M-14s, nightvision and an M-2 .50 cal. machinegun. Problem solved. 12 hour overlapping shifts, with two men on at any given time.

In a word....YES!

Piracey has been going on since man has taken to the sea. What is relitively new is an escalation of it in modern times do to the fact of the non-aggression stance by the maritime industry due to many reasons of liability, countries having laws about weapons in their territorial waters etc. etc. In days past you did not have so many problems because of less regulations and the common sense that was out there of self-defense on the seas. at the very least ships of yore and I mean up to mid 20th century, carried small arms and the crew weren't afraid to use them. I would bet that in those days weapons at most were hidden on vessels in case of a port search by whatever powers were in charge and those powers ignored such things or by the way of doing buisness bribery was expected. And at sea these pirate attcks were most likely unreported by captains and crews because of the mentality that is part of the job to deal with it by force if necessary and keep quiet about it . What happens at sea stays at sea.

I would imagine that just a few (4-3) compentent personnel armed with M79 40mm grenade launchers, appropriate long range rifles, and some hand grenades would do just fine. Better would be one of the Dillon mini guns.

Whoa whoa whoa my shipmates! last time I checked it was still unsafe if not down right crazy to think that you are going to fire any type of firearm on a ship holding one million cubic feet of compressed natural gas, learn Maritime history this mistake has been made before mateys

1) Guns
2) Radar Weapon (SOUND AMPLIFIER)

(X)Guns XXX WRONG ANSWER!!!
Radar sound amplifier AHH!!!
Right Answer!!

Cruise Ship Companies are starting to outfit their ships with a radar sound amplfier that focuses a hi-pitch siren at about 400 Dcbs the average gunshot is about 140 Dcbs respectively, this has been found to be effective in deturring pirates form approaching any closer to the ship, the siren is deafening and extremely uncomfortable, definitely a technology that more companies operating in the open ocean could use in the global fight against piracy. Remember the Auchille Laurel or the The USS Coal?

"There is a consensus in the shipping industry that, in the vast majority of cases, having an armed guard is not a good idea. The No. 1 reason is that it could cause an escalation of violence and pirates that have so far been trying to scare ships could now start to kill people," said Roger Middleton, an expert on Somali piracy at London-based think tank Chatham House.

Just give the bullies what they want, and they might just go away. This is the liberal mentality being shoved down the throats of
people everywhere from elementary schools on up.

When will these pansies learn that not responding with force is what is causing escalation. The answer is simple. Aircraft and ocean going vessels on constant patrol, using the best surveillance equipment available. All those oil companies, cruise lines, and other interested parties could be charged a fee to foot the bill. It would coast less than paying the ransom.

When pirate "motherships" are spotted, they are sunk from the air, naval surface vessel or by submarine. Small pirate skiffs are sunk as well. End of problem.

I know that there is a lot of area to cover, but if all the interested nations chipped in a few vessels, it would be doable. Escort ships for the cruise ships would bew possible as well.

SlickRick, How long do you think it would take for the bad guys to buy some ear protection?

Since there is so much area to cover, jet aircraft would seem to be a logical option, but it would probably have to be carrier-based as it would be hard to find any dependable land bases in that unstable region.

Does the Navy have a version of the A-10 (Warthog) or anything comparable? It seems like one of those could make short work of any vessels the pirates have.
