I'm contemplating having my LNIB 686 CS-1 3" worked on. The trigger could use some work, it's heavy. If I do this, I'll shoot some IDPA with it.

My question is, will this hurt the value of this revolver? I know that my 66 3", is still worth a fair amount, even though it's been shot a bit. Will the same apply to a CS-1 that has some rounds through it?

Do you CS-1 owners shoot/carry yours, or are they safe queens? Thanks! Regards 18DAI.

18DAI, I shoot mine!!! I really am not to concerned with what the value is going to be from me shooting it or not. Its just way to much fun at the range. I'm sure there are lots of folks that would put in the safe and forget about it, not me. I only have one thats not fired more due to its age than anything else. Its my Greatgrandfathers Winchester 1897 Breakdown pump. Its at an age when it needs TLC so it will last till my son can take it.

Take that CS-1 and shoot it, thats what its for!!!!

I had 2 4" NIB CS-1's until recently...sold one to a member here, and shot the other one.
I don't think "shooting" it will devalue it to much...but customization will. At least from a purist/collector's standpoint.
There are plenty of normal 686's to send off for alteration/customization...but it's a 3" CS your talking about....those seem to be a bit of a Holy grail. I have a standard 4" 686, so now I'm questioning why I shot the CS-1...oh well.
The CS-1's seem quite desireable here...but not for safe queen status like many other "rare" models....they seem to be getting shot.
ETA: holster wear devalues a gun much more than shooting it, in my opinion.

I have a 4" and a 3" CS-1's Both are in boxes 100% original. I shot both of them to zero the sights at 25 yrds, cleaned them and put them away.

What's a safe queen?

We're not talking about the original 1911 prototype crafted by John Browning here. These things have no "collector" value at all. Sure, an unfired one will get you a few extra bucks, if you can convince somebody that it really is unfired (it shouldn't be, from the factory). It's a tool. A fine tool, don't abuse it and give it proper care, but use it definitely. Why wouldn't you? To make a few extra bucks "IF" you ever sell it? Why even own it then? Buy two if you must, and keep one 'safe queen'. But don't deny yourself the pleasure of owning it.

I shoot mine and its still worth more than I paid... I like it alot so I am not worried about making it "safe"

Thanks

The CS-1 was made for/to Customs Service specs....has a matte (bead blast) finish, round butt, and pinned black front sight. Those are the obvious differences...there ar probably more.

I look at it this way...if you only have a few guns...there's no room for safe queens...but if you're fortunate enought own many, then it's OK to keep a few prestine.
I treat all my guns the same, like the investment they are...but some are dedicated for carry and heavy use...some are dedicated for range time but never see a holster...and some sit new in the box.
I'm fortunate to have doubles of many models...so one can be a shooter and one can be a queen safe. If you don't have that option...choices like this can be hard.
Its all about personal opinion and preference.

smithbc: Welcome, and if you haven't done so already, use the search function to find lots of info on the CS-1 variations...you may even find some info on the CS-3!

And, FWIW, my 3" CS-1 is still BNIB, and unfired since leaving the factory. That and my 2" M60 NY-1 are the only ones I don't take out. YMMW...

I'd shoot it. Of course,I don't have any safe queens.

I would be on the side of shooting your guns now, while alive.

In most cases your heirs will not give an "anus rodentum" about your precious safe queens. They will either be sold for the purchase of "leisure items" (drugs, hookers, stereos, etc.) or taken out and shot-the-hell-out-of while Hollywooding the opening and closing of the cylinder!!

I shoot my 3' CS-1 686M. It's a great shooter, and a handy go fishin' gun, or woods walkin' gun.

I don't mean to upset anyone, just my opinion, but I think that a safe queen, unless it's a VERY rare, extremely valuable gun, is a wasted gun. Life's too short. Shoot and enjoy. Others look at certain guns as valuable art. I once had a belgian hi-power that I had royal blued, jeweled and grips. The most beautiful gun I've ever seen. Couldn't bring myself to shoot it after that and sold it soon after. I have no room for guns that I won't shoot.

Like L-Frame says, "life's too short".....

I"ve got a minty Model 19 that I sort of consider a safe queen; I carry to the range in a hard case, never use a holster, and clean it carefully when done; it still looks like new. So go for it!
